Liam Delap, the Chelsea striker, has rejoined the team's training sessions following his recovery from a hamstring injury. The 22-year-old, who transferred to Chelsea from Ipswich Town for £30 million this June, suffered the setback during a 2-0 victory over Fulham in August.
Despite his return to training, Chelsea's manager Enzo Maresca confirmed that Delap will miss this weekend's Premier League match against Sunderland. Maresca hinted at a potential return in upcoming fixtures, particularly for the League Cup clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Initially, Delap was expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks, but later assessments suggested a longer recovery, pushing his return to possibly December. His involvement in training is a positive sign for his rehabilitation. Maresca stated, “Liam participated in some team drills yesterday for the first time. While he won't be available for tomorrow's match, he might be for the next one.”
In light of Delap’s injury, Chelsea has recalled Marc Guiu, a 19-year-old striker, from a season-long loan at Sunderland. Guiu faced challenges at first but has demonstrated noticeable improvement. Maresca commended his commitment, saying, “We discussed his training methods a few weeks back. He made the necessary adjustments and earned a chance.”
The manager noted that Guiu's earlier training attitude hindered his first-team opportunities. However, since refining his work ethic, Guiu is set to make a significant impact in future matches. Maresca also highlighted the importance of gradual growth for young talents, acknowledging Guiu's constructive response to coaching.
Chelsea is striving for its fifth consecutive victory across competitions, following a 5-1 triumph over Ajax in the Champions League. They'll face Sunderland, who have garnered 14 points from their first eight league games and currently sit in seventh place. Maresca praised Sunderland's impressive teamwork and physicality, emphasizing the tough test ahead for his squad.
He likened Sunderland's style to his experiences in the Championship with Leicester City, appreciating their collective approach under French coach Regis Le Bris. Maresca remarked on Sunderland's robust physical and tactical capabilities, indicating they will pose a formidable challenge.
Despite Delap's absence, Chelsea is determined to build on their winning streak. With Guiu prepared to contribute and the team’s solid Champions League form, Maresca remains confident about overcoming challenges and achieving success in both domestic and European competitions.
