Liverpool forward Federico Chiesa has opted not to join the Italian national team for their upcoming World Cup qualifying matches in November, as confirmed by head coach Gennaro Gattuso on Monday. Italy is gearing up for significant clashes—one away against Moldova and another at home against Norway—as they look to finalize their group qualification efforts. The Azzurri find themselves trailing group leaders Norway by three points, who also possess a substantially better goal difference.
During a press conference, Gattuso noted that Chiesa has personally decided to decline the call-up. “I frequently communicate with him. We must honor each other’s decisions and individual challenges,” Gattuso remarked. The coach emphasized, “We know well what we discuss, and I must honour the player's words. There’s nothing else to add.” His comments underscored that this decision was made by Chiesa, receiving acceptance without conflict.
Chiesa, who transferred to Liverpool from Juventus in the summer of 2024, has faced difficulties in England. Persistent injuries and limited playing time have hindered his ability to secure a regular spot in Arne Slot’s lineup. The 28-year-old has begun just two matches this season, both in the Carabao Cup, and has seen minimal action in league play. His decision to pass on international duty is believed to be influenced by concerns over his match fitness and rhythm.
This marks not the first time Chiesa has been sidelined from Gattuso’s roster. In October, he was also left off Italy’s squad for qualifiers against Estonia and Israel. On that occasion, Gattuso indicated it was a “joint decision” with the player. Chiesa had voiced his intent to return to international competition only when he felt “100 percent ready.” The forward hasn't represented Italy since 2023, missing various matches due to recurring muscle issues and recovery periods.
Since his transfer to Liverpool, Chiesa's pitch time has significantly diminished. Last season, he appeared in only 14 games across all competitions, with minor ailments and lengthy recovery phases interrupting his form. At the onset of the current campaign, he wasn’t included in Liverpool’s initial Champions League squad. He was later added to the European roster after a long-term injury to teammate Giovanni Leoni. Despite these setbacks, Liverpool's coach Arne Slot has publicly shown support, asserting that Chiesa “needs time to regain full rhythm and confidence.”
For Italy, the upcoming fixtures are vital. They will compete against Moldova away before hosting Norway, a match that could be pivotal for qualification. Norway, led by the prolific striker Erling Haaland, currently enjoys a 16-goal supremacy in goal difference, complicating Italy’s path to direct qualification. The Azzurri must secure victories in both matches and rely on favorable outcomes in Norway's other matches to maintain any chance.
Gattuso remained composed regarding Chiesa’s absence, directing his focus to players at his disposal. “Our team spirit is strong. The players present recognize the importance of these games,” he stated. “Naturally, Federico is a great talent and crucial to the team, but the collective effort matters most.” Gattuso’s remarks reveal his understanding of player fatigue and the mental pressure faced in modern football, where balancing club and national commitments can be challenging.
Chiesa's choice to decline international duty has elicited mixed sentiments in Italy, provoking disappointment among some fans who believe the national team needs its top players for such critical matches. Conversely, others exhibit understanding, noting the winger's tough physical and mental battles this year. Analysts and former players have also suggested prioritizing Chiesa's long-term health over immediate appearances.
For the time being, Chiesa is expected to remain in England, concentrating on training with Liverpool during the international break. Reports indicate he aims to use this period to rebuild fitness and sharpen his skills ahead of rejoining regular first-team activities. Liverpool’s medical team is closely monitoring his situation to avoid any recurrence of past injuries. Should all proceed well, Chiesa may be back in contention for Liverpool’s forthcoming Premier League fixtures in December.
Chiesa’s decision underscores the increasing mindfulness among modern athletes regarding fitness, mental health, and career sustainability. While his absence poses a challenge for Italy, it provides Chiesa an opportunity to build resilience and regain confidence. Gattuso’s respectful approach signals a vital cultural shift in football, where player welfare now holds equal weight to team achievement. Supporters of both Italy and Liverpool will hope this brief hiatus paves the way for the winger's return to form.
