Beijing: Following a catastrophic fire in Hong Kong that resulted in at least 128 fatalities, China has launched a critical national initiative aimed at addressing fire safety in high-rise structures. This incident marks one of the deadliest fires the city has recorded in many years, stirring significant alarm regarding safety protocols in densely populated residential towers.
As reported by state broadcaster CCTV, the State Council Work Safety Committee has issued instructions for an immediate nationwide safety inspection and rectification initiative. This campaign is focused on pinpointing significant fire hazards and bolstering safety regulations pertaining to high-rise buildings, which are prevalent across various Chinese cities due to rapid urban growth.
Authorities will conduct comprehensive evaluations concerning the deployment of flammable or extremely combustible building materials near tall structures. The directive emphasizes the importance of scrutinizing traditional building methods, such as bamboo scaffolding and non-flame-retardant safety nets, which continue to be relied upon at numerous construction locations.
CCTV also relayed that local authorities have been told to prioritize safety pursuits with stringent monitoring. “Every region must intensify their sense of responsibility, harmonize development with safety, and regard the inspection and elimination of fire hazards in high-rise buildings as paramount,” the notice detailed.
Furthermore, officials have been directed to amplify oversight, strengthen law enforcement, and guarantee that safety enhancements yield evident and enduring results. This initiative underscores China's escalating commitment to averting large-scale incidents and ensuring the safety of residents in congested urban settings.
