China is advancing in maritime technology with an ambitious project to create a 78,000-ton floating island engineered for extreme conditions, including nuclear blasts. This semi-submersible twin-hull platform aims to serve as a long-term, all-weather scientific station in the deep ocean.
Named the Deep-Sea All-Weather Resident Floating Research Facility, the island will measure 138 meters in length and 85 meters in width, with a main deck extending 45 meters above the water. Despite its massive scale, akin to China's Fujian aircraft carrier, it will accommodate 238 individuals for up to four months without the need for resupply.
A key highlight is its impressive resistance to natural disasters. The platform is designed to handle waves between 6 to 9 meters and withstand category 17 typhoons, ensuring durability in the most adverse oceanic conditions. Researchers are utilizing advanced “metamaterial” sandwich panels that can absorb destructive shocks, transforming them into softer forces to protect both personnel and equipment.
Though promoted as a civilian scientific endeavor, the specifications reflect military standards from GJB 1060.1-1991, focusing on nuclear blast resilience. Essential compartments—such as navigation, communication, and emergency backup systems—are fortified to endure the most severe scenarios.
Expected to be completed by 2028, this floating island is the result of over ten years of research, development, and planning. The project team anticipates it will facilitate deep-sea exploration, oceanographic studies, and prolonged habitation in harsh environments.
Experts highlight that such a facility could represent a major breakthrough in oceanic research infrastructure, merging civilian scientific research with advanced engineering. The unique combination of cutting-edge materials, structural resilience, and autonomous design positions the island as a significant achievement in worldwide maritime initiatives.
