Chinese Premier Urges Cooperation With US for Stable Global Future

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Chinese Premier Li Qiang has stressed that the United States and China must “work in the same direction” to manage their differences and strengthen what he described as the world’s most important bilateral partnership. His remarks came in New York on Thursday, where he addressed a private meeting with about 20 American business leaders and policy experts.

The event was organized by the US-China Business Council and the National Committee on US-China Relations. Journalists were asked to leave after Li’s short opening statement, but the groups later confirmed that the closed-door talks focused on economic ties, investment, trade, and areas where the two sides could cooperate despite existing tensions.

Li emphasized that American business voices matter in shaping the relationship. “The actions that you take are crucial,” he told the executives, pointing to their influence in keeping communication alive even during political disagreements.

Stephen Orlins, president of the National Committee on US-China Relations, explained that such discussions are essential for American interests. “Business leaders and policy experts must have the opportunity to discuss key issues, address concerns, and maintain working relationships with Chinese leaders,” he said in a statement.

A Delicate Time for US-China Relations

Premier Li is in New York to head China’s delegation at the United Nations General Assembly, where he will deliver China’s main address on Friday. He represents President Xi Jinping, who did not travel for this year’s session.

Li’s message comes at a sensitive moment in ties between the world’s two largest economies. Trade disputes over tariffs, computer chips, critical minerals, and the future of apps like TikTok have deepened strains. At the same time, military and strategic tensions in the South China Sea, Taiwan, and other flashpoints continue to challenge both governments.

Despite these disputes, Li underlined that steady cooperation is vital. “The China-US relation is the most important bilateral partnership in the world. Its steady development requires our two governments to work in the same direction,” he said.

Recent Contact Between Xi and Trump

The meeting also follows a lengthy phone call last week between President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump. According to Trump, both leaders plan to meet in person at a regional summit in South Korea next month, and Trump intends to visit China next year.

This direct communication has raised hopes that the two sides could prevent relations from sliding further, even as disagreements remain deep on issues ranging from technology controls to human rights concerns.

Why This Relationship Matters

The relationship between Washington and Beijing affects far more than just the two countries involved. Global supply chains, economic stability, and international security are all tied to how the U.S. and China manage their competition.

For businesses, smoother ties could mean more predictable trade flows, fewer restrictions on technology and investment, and more opportunities for cooperation in areas like climate change, public health, and global development. For governments, constructive dialogue could help avoid conflict and manage disputes peacefully.

The Path Ahead

While Li’s call for cooperation was welcomed by the business leaders, the real test will be whether both governments can turn words into action. The coming months — including the UN address, the planned Trump-Xi meeting, and ongoing trade negotiations — will reveal whether the two sides can find practical steps toward stability.

The message from Premier Li was clear: dialogue and joint effort remain the only path forward. For the world’s two largest economies, learning to manage rivalry while working together on shared challenges will decide not only their future, but the global order itself.
