In a remarkable display of batting prowess, Akash Choudhary, a fast bowler from Meghalaya, secured his place in cricket history during the Ranji Trophy. Achieving six sixes in a single over, he also set the record for the fastest fifty in first-class cricket. This extraordinary performance occurred in the Plate Group match against Arunachal Pradesh in Surat.
Choudhary became just the third player in first-class cricket to hit six sixes in one over, joining two legends, Sir Garry Sobers and Ravi Shastri. He accomplished this while facing left-arm spinner Limar Dabi during the 126th over, with each ball sailing over the boundary, showcasing his fearless attack and impressive timing.
In addition to the six sixes, Choudhary recorded the fastest fifty in first-class cricket, reaching this milestone in a mere 11 balls, breaking Wayne White's previous record of 12 balls from 2012. His half-century took just nine minutes to complete, second only to Clive Inman's eight-minute fifty in 1965.
Entering at number eight for Meghalaya, Choudhary found his team in a strong position at 576 for 6. He started slowly with a dot and two singles before unleashing a barrage of sixes. In an electrifying performance against Limar Dabi, he hit every delivery for six, thrilling the crowd with each successive boundary.
Not resting on his laurels, Choudhary continued his onslaught with two more sixes in the next over, delivered by TNR Mohith, securing his fifty. He finished with a remarkable 50 runs off just 14 balls, while the team later declared at 628 for 6.
Choudhary also showcased his bowling skills, taking one wicket in Arunachal Pradesh's first innings as they were bowled out for 73 runs. He added two more wickets in their follow-on innings, contributing significantly to Meghalaya's dominance.
Prior to this notable innings, Choudhary's first-class statistics included 30 matches with 503 runs and an average of 14.37. Renowned more for his bowling, this performance might shift perceptions about his batting capabilities. Choudhary has also demonstrated his versatility across 28 List-A matches and 30 T20 games.
Choudhary’s earlier match against Bihar hinted at his growing batting potential, where he scored an unbeaten 60 with four sixes. His recent feats highlight the emerging role of Meghalaya in Indian domestic cricket, inspiring young cricketers and bringing pride to his home state.
Choudhary’s innings will go down as one of the most thrilling in Indian domestic cricket history. By aligning himself with cricketing greats, he has marked his name in the records. His explosive 11-ball fifty and eight consecutive sixes are sure to inspire aspiring cricketers globally and serve as a proud testament for Meghalaya.
