This Friday night, the Los Angeles Clippers are set to face the Dallas Mavericks in an NBA Cup matchup, both teams battling significant injury setbacks. The Clippers aim to break a six-game losing streak, while the Mavericks are floundering with a 3-9 record, their worst start since the 2017-18 season.
The Clippers are embarking on a challenging seven-game road trip, missing two of their key players. Recently, it was confirmed that guard Bradley Beal will be sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a left hip fracture, a sizable loss as Beal was anticipated to be a pivotal scoring asset this year.
Meanwhile, forward Kawhi Leonard is traveling with the team but will miss his sixth consecutive game due to a sprained ankle and foot. The absence of both Beal and Leonard has made it particularly difficult for the Clippers to stay competitive defensively.
In their latest outing, the Clippers fell 130-116 to the Denver Nuggets at home, struggling to contain Nikola Jokic, who exploded for 55 points along with 12 rebounds. James Harden was the standout for the Clippers, netting 23 points, while Jordan Miller achieved a personal best with 22 points and Ivica Zubac contributed 18.
Coach Tyronn Lue emphasized the need for the upcoming road trip to serve as a mental reset, stating, “We hit some rough patches these last six games. Going out on the road, playing better basketball, getting wins—it starts with Dallas. It won’t be easy.”
The Mavericks are nursing several injuries as well. In their recent 123-114 loss to the Phoenix Suns, the team was without Kyrie Irving (knee), Anthony Davis (calf), and Dereck Lively II (knee), weakening both their offensive and defensive units.
Furthermore, Dallas suffered another blow when P.J. Washington Jr. exited the Suns game in the first quarter due to a left shoulder strain. His current status is day-to-day. Coach Jason Kidd showed appreciation for his team's tenacity, stating that they continued to fight despite missing several key players.
Klay Thompson recorded a season-high 19 points off the bench for the Mavericks. Having joined Dallas last season after a notable career with the Golden State Warriors, Thompson noted that the team has been beset by injuries since his arrival and he looks forward to the day when the entire squad is fit.
In previous encounters last season, Dallas lost three of four matchups against the Clippers. Los Angeles is experimenting with different lineups this month due to the injuries, granting more playtime to young talents like Cam Christie, Kobe Brown, Kobe Sanders, and Jordan Miller.
Coach Lue expressed confidence in the young roster and their capacity to grow, acknowledging the limited margin for error given the injury situations, but believes that the effort and confidence from these younger players can help maintain the team's competitive edge.
