Italy edged closer to their third consecutive Davis Cup title with a dramatic 2-0 semi-final victory over Belgium on Friday. The standout performance came from Flavio Cobolli, whose unforgettable match showcased emotional spirit and determination, paving the way for Italy's third final appearance in a row.
Only 23 years old, Cobolli played in front of a fervent home crowd at SuperTennis Arena. Supported by enthusiastic fans, he overcame tremendous pressure against Belgium’s Zizou Bergs, winning 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(15) in a match characterized by a tense, hard-fought final-set tiebreak. The tiebreak extended to an astonishing 32 points, solidifying its place as one of the most gripping moments in Davis Cup history.
Both contestants displayed fearless and powerful tennis, engaging in lengthy rallies and high-stakes points that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. Bergs appeared poised to force a decisive doubles match, while Cobolli faced his own challenges, having initially failed to convert his first six match points. In a remarkable display of tenacity, he ultimately sealed the win on his seventh match point with a powerful unreturnable serve, igniting a jubilant celebration amongst the Italian supporters.
Italy's captain, Filippo Volandri, expressed admiration for Cobolli's performance, stating, “In my five years as captain, I have never witnessed anything like this. The match was incredible; it was 5 percent strategy and 95 percent heart.” Volandri's remarks underscored Cobolli's fighting spirit throughout the match.
Earlier, Matteo Berrettini set the stage for Italy's success with a composed display, defeating Belgium’s Raphael Collignon 6-3, 6-4. Berrettini's win marked his eighth consecutive victory in Davis Cup play, contributing significantly to Italy's recent successes, including last year's title defence against the Netherlands.
Italy is set to face either Germany or Spain in the final on Sunday, where a win would place them in the record books as the first nation to secure three consecutive titles since the end of the Challenge Round format in 1971. Such an achievement would signify a historic milestone for both the team and Italian tennis.
With top talents like Berrettini and the rising star Cobolli, Italy approaches Sunday’s final with confidence and ambition, just one victory away from achieving a rare Davis Cup three-peat, a feat accomplished by only a few nations in history.
