The Toronto Blue Jays are enhancing their pitching lineup by securing a three-year, $30 million contract with right-hander Cody Ponce, according to sources.
At 31, Ponce has just completed a stellar season in the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) with the Hanwha Eagles, where he posted an impressive 17-1 record, a 1.89 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and 252 strikeouts across 180.2 innings. His remarkable performance earned him the league’s Most Valuable Player honor.
Ponce's last Major League Baseball experience was with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2021, where he made 15 appearances with a 7.04 ERA over 38.1 innings. Despite prior setbacks in the MLB, Ponce demonstrated significant improvement in the KBO, leading the Blue Jays to believe he can replicate this success in the major leagues.
Initially picked in the second round of the 2015 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers, Ponce holds a career MLB ERA of 5.86 with 48 strikeouts in 55.1 innings. With this contract, Toronto aims to leverage the veteran's recent achievements to bolster their pitching corps for the future.
