Spike in Sydney Gun Ownership Amidst Safety Worries

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Spike in Sydney Gun Ownership Following Beach Incident

Recent reports have thrust Sydney's gun ownership into the spotlight, revealing that numerous residents possess hundreds of firearms on a single licence. This news comes in the wake of a tragic shooting event at Bondi Beach that resulted in at least 15 fatalities, including a child. This spike in gun ownership raises global safety questions as Australia navigates its historic reputation for stringent gun control.

Key Findings from Recent Data

Firearms registry statistics indicate that several individuals in Sydney's suburbs own extraordinarily high quantities of guns. For example, one resident in the Chifley–La Perouse region holds 295 firearms under one licence. Others from locations such as Punchbowl, Terrey Hills, Narrabeen, and Burwood have between 190 and 226 guns each, with none identified as registered collectors or licensed dealers.

Approximately 41% of firearm licence holders reside in major urban centres, including Sydney, Newcastle, and Wollongong, where the average gun ownership is three per individual, while the overall rate in New South Wales exceeds four firearms per licence holder.

Legal Framework for Gun Ownership

Currently, New South Wales laws impose no upper limit on firearm ownership for licence holders. This loophole allows few individuals to amass hundreds of firearms in certain areas, regardless of the small number of total licence holders in those suburbs.

State data reveals that one in every 33 residents in New South Wales possesses a firearm licence, contributing to a staggering total of over 1.1 million legally registered firearms in the state—the highest figure in Australia.

Escalating Concerns for Community Safety

Advocates for gun safety emphasize that the high density of firearms in residential neighbourhoods heightens the potential for theft, misuse, or improper storage. An estimated 500,000 legally held firearms currently populate suburban areas across Australia.

Moreover, intelligence reports estimate approximately 200,000 illegal firearms are in circulation, intensifying fears related to crime and terrorism.

Context on Australia’s Gun Control Policies

Following the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, Australia adopted stringent national gun laws. However, civilian gun ownership has surged by around 25% since then, ultimately surpassing four million legally held firearms nationally.

The recent attack at Bondi Beach has reignited discussions concerning the effectiveness of current gun laws in curbing mass violence.

Government Actions and Future Forward

In response to the attack, Australian leaders convened for urgent talks on enhancing national gun regulations. Suggested actions involve capping the number of firearms an individual can own and potentially restricting firearm licences exclusively to Australian citizens.

A comprehensive review of the National Firearms Agreement is now in progress, with expected announcements regarding recommendations in the near future. If sanctioned, Australia may witness its most significant gun law reforms in decades, altering Sydney's firearm ownership landscape and potentially offering another global benchmark.
