On Saturday, Faridabad and Greater Noida experienced tragic construction mishaps, leading to the death of five individuals and injuring numerous workers. The events have ignited alarms in these neighborhoods, amplifying worries regarding construction safety protocols.
In the Harfla region of Faridabad, a three-storey structure under construction collapsed abruptly. Debris scattering the streets included substantial concrete fragments, shattered bricks, and bent iron rods. Authorities are probing the cause of this incident, which is still unclear. Eyewitness accounts paint a chaotic scene where workers hurried to escape from the debris.
A similar tragedy unfolded in Rabupura, Greater Noida, where a three-storey building in Nagla Hukum Village saw its roof cave in around 11:50 am. The incident occurred as workers were dismantling the shuttering from a recently poured slab, claiming the life of 22-year-old Shakir and injuring five others. Local police have identified the deceased as Kamil (20), Zeeshan (22), and Nadeem (25), all residents of Jewar. Reports indicate that some laborers from Madhya Pradesh fled the site post-incident.
Immediate rescue operations were initiated at both locations. In Greater Noida, police, along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), collaborated to help those trapped. Neighbors and community members rallied together to assist in clearing the debris, showcasing a swift local response to the tragedies.
These incidents emphasize the urgent need for adherence to construction safety standards, particularly in light of warnings from experts about the risks posed by rushed building, inadequate supervision, and poor-quality materials. Regulatory oversight is essential to prevent such disasters.
Families are mourning, and workers are raising concerns about safety practices in construction. Authorities have pledged a comprehensive investigation into the collapses as efforts continue to search for and aid any remaining injured individuals.
