Fashion trends come and go, yet some styles resurface with renewed zeal. The peplum is one such trend set to shine in 2025. Characterized by a flared ruffle at the waist, this silhouette adds flair and elegance, appealing to fashion enthusiasts globally.
Recently, Ashley Park flaunted a stunning lavender peplum dress featuring a voluminous ruffle at the waist, paired with a corset bodice. Meanwhile, Ariana Grande interpreted the style her way in a strapless pink gown with a reverse peplum detail. In the Indian fashion scene, actress Tripti Dimrii is merging peplum with Indian styles, donning a corseted peplum top alongside sheer, lacy sharara pants for a striking and modern ensemble.
On the catwalk, many designers are reinventing the peplum. Labels like Rina Dhaka, Tanieya Khanuja, Ashlyn, Bally, Alaïa, and Dries Van Noten are presenting peplum designs that feature sharper tailoring, asymmetrical shapes, and trendy materials like tulle, organza, and light crinoline. As Rina Dhaka noted, “The peplum originates from Victorian dressmaking and experienced another revival in the 1990s through off-shoulder tops and corsets. Today, designers are reinventing it with innovative, sustainable fabrics that blend retro elegance with a modern edge.”
Tracing its roots back to the ancient Greek “peplos,” a tunic that flared out at the waist, the peplum has had a storied past. Christian Dior bolstered its popularity in the 1940s with his iconic “New Look” collection, which featured fitted waists and flared overskirts, formulating an elegant hourglass figure. A revival in the 1980s coincided with the era of “power dressing,” showcasing structured blazers, shoulder pads, and distinctive hems. This trend also found its way into the 2010s via red carpets, juxtaposed with skinny jeans and striking accessories.
Fashion stylist Isha Bhansali provides guidance on how to spot this trend beautifully, particularly for those with Indian body types. She recommends opting for solid or darker shades to streamline the overall look, teaming peplums with heels for an elongated silhouette, and choosing delicate jewelry as accents. For relaxed occasions, a soft peplum top with comfortable jeans is a perfect match. When embracing Indian fusion styles, she advocates for pairing corseted peplums with shararas or sheer trousers to achieve an instant touch of elegance.
As we step into 2025, the peplum trend has evolved into a modern classic that resonates with historical significance, celebrity glamour, and contemporary aesthetics, affirming that certain fashion narratives are indeed eternal.
