Cortina d'Ampezzo Limits Tickets for Winter Olympics Due to Transport Concerns

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy – As the 2026 Winter Olympics approach in just over two months, local organizers have decided to enforce ticket sales limitations in the scenic Dolomite destination of Cortina d’Ampezzo. Due to transport delays and hold-ups in the creation of a vital cable car, officials are reducing the number of fans permitted to attend.

The Apollonio-Socrepes gondola, intended to shuttle fans from the heart of the town to the Tofane Alpine Skiing Centre, is behind schedule. Authorities warn that the absence of this key lift could lead to significant traffic congestion, complicating access for visitors to the ski areas.

In addition to skiing, Cortina will host events including curling, bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton. Provincial transport councillor Massimo Bortoluzzi announced that the anticipated number of spectators, originally set at 200,000, has been cut by 15% to accommodate the town’s transport capabilities.

Cortina, known for hosting the Winter Games in 1956, encounters distinct challenges. Lacking a train station, the main road can become congested during high traffic times. With a resident population of just approximately 5,500, managing the influx of thousands of visitors is a formidable task. Only vehicles with special permits will be permitted in town during the Games, catering mainly to local residents, second-home owners, and essential service providers. Spectators will need to use shuttle buses from designated parking areas to access event locations.

The gondola project includes 50 cabins and three stations, with capacity to transport up to 2,400 passengers each hour. Despite facing legal challenges and geological issues, authorities express confidence that the gondola will be operational before the Games start.

With these stringent measures in place, organizers are focused on ensuring safety and access while maintaining the Olympic spirit in this historic alpine venue.
