England opener Zak Crawley conveyed assurance that the squad is set for the opening Ashes Test against Australia next week in Perth. Critics had voiced concerns regarding England’s readiness, noting their single warm-up match against the England Lions at Lilac Hill. Nonetheless, Crawley reported feeling thoroughly prepared and is focused on his contributions to the team.
Having recently clocked 82 runs off 101 balls in the first innings of the game versus the Lions, Crawley’s performance underscored his form and readiness for the Ashes series. He emphasized that personal preparation and mental focus are crucial for tackling the demands of international cricket, despite the limited number of practice matches.
Crawley acknowledged the advantages of their short tour preparation, suggesting it acclimatized players to local weather conditions, including the fly situation often encountered in Western Australia. He believes these minor adaptations will play a positive role as the Ashes series commences at Perth Stadium, known for its ample seating and vibrant atmosphere.
The 27-year-old expressed particular enthusiasm for returning to Perth, a city where he previously competed in the Big Bash League with the Perth Scorchers. Crawley has personal connections there, including friendships and a past batting coach, adding extra significance to the upcoming match. He described Optus Stadium as an “unbelievable ground” and looks forward to the backing of English fans present at the game.
He mentioned that participating in this Test match would be a remarkable milestone, especially since he missed out on playing in Perth previously due to COVID-19 regulations. Eager to take on the opening batting role for England in front of a substantial audience, he aims to seize the chance and support the team’s effort to launch the five-match Ashes series successfully.
Crawley concluded by stating that while discussions about preparation time linger, the team is mentally and physically fit. His priority remains to execute his role effectively and aid England in mounting a strong challenge throughout the series. With the inaugural Ashes Test just around the corner, Crawley and his teammates are hopeful about kicking off the series positively.
