Cuba Confronts Chikungunya and Dengue Crisis Amid Stretched Resources

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Cuba is facing a significant public health crisis, with 33 fatalities reported since July due to chikungunya and dengue, including 21 children. This alarming increase has affected all 15 provinces, adding strain to a healthcare system already overwhelmed by ongoing economic challenges.

Chikungunya, a mosquito-borne illness characterized by high fever and debilitating joint pain, accounts for most of the fatalities. Dengue, which presents with high fever and flu-like symptoms, is responsible for 12 deaths in total. The initial outbreak started in the western province of Matanzas and has swiftly spread throughout the country’s population of 9.7 million.

The outbreak’s timing exacerbates the situation; ongoing shortages of clean water, medicine, and food have compelled families to store water in containers, creating prime breeding spots for mosquitoes. Moreover, neglected waste disposal and deficiencies in fumigation efforts, once pivotal in Cuba's public health approach, have accelerated the transmission of these diseases.

Just a decade prior, Cuba successfully contained a similar chikungunya outbreak through prompt government action. However, the current scenario is challenging due to dwindling foreign currency reserves, the impact of US sanctions, and the aftereffects of the pandemic, all of which have weakened the public health initiatives that were previously exemplary in the region.

As the population struggles with water shortages and unreliable services, local authorities encourage residents to remove stagnant water and uphold hygiene standards—a daunting effort amid the nation's acute economic distress.

Cuba now finds itself in a race against time to control the outbreaks, as climbing infection rates place more vulnerable groups, particularly children, in peril.
