Sidney Crosby is on the verge of a significant achievement with the Pittsburgh Penguins, nearing Mario Lemieux's record for most points in franchise history. He is currently just seven points shy of Lemieux and holds the franchise record for total points in both regular and postseason.
During Monday's match, Crosby netted his 58th and 59th goals against the Philadelphia Flyers, leading to a resounding 5-1 victory. His performance against the Flyers is unparalleled, with 59 goals and 137 points in 92 games – the most recorded by any player against Philadelphia.
“I’m sure [Lemieux] knows me well enough to understand that it’s not really something I want to discuss,” Crosby commented regarding the record chase. “I’ll just play as usual. If it happens, it happens.”
At 38, Crosby boasts 1,716 career points, closing in on Lemieux’s 1,723. Under Lemieux’s ownership, he has guided the Penguins to three Stanley Cup championships in 2009, 2016, and 2017.
Crosby’s remarkable display against the Flyers included a milestone 60th goal to start a road game and a second power-play goal in the second period. This win halted Philadelphia's three-game victory streak and helped Pittsburgh recover from a heavy 7-2 defeat against Toronto.
Despite a challenging beginning to the season, with the Penguins facing seven defeats in nine games in November, Crosby remains pivotal in the team's Metropolitan Division aspirations. Currently tied with the Flyers at 31 points, the Penguins rely heavily on Crosby’s talent and leadership.
“His greatness as a player and as a person shows through his relentless pursuit of success,” noted teammate Bryan Rust, who contributed a goal and two assists in the game. “It drives him to achieve more and more.”
With the NHL goal-scoring title also in his sights, Crosby's pursuit of records continues to energize fans and provide the Penguins a distinct advantage in each competition.
