In an electrifying NBA clash, Stephen Curry showcased his exceptional skills by scoring 46 points, guiding the Golden State Warriors to a narrow 125-120 win against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday. The match unfolded in San Antonio and was the first of two encounters between the teams within a span of three days, with another game scheduled for Friday in the NBA Cup.
The Spurs opened the game in commanding fashion, establishing a 16-point lead during the first half and maintaining a seven-point advantage at the halftime buzzer. But the Warriors regained momentum in the third quarter, with Curry dominating and netting 22 points in just that quarter, which contributed nearly half of the Warriors' 43 points in the period. His scoring prowess and intense energy flipped the script of the game.
By the conclusion of the third quarter, Golden State had surged ahead with a 92-84 lead. From that point onward, they refused to let the Spurs regain their footing. The Spurs narrowed the gap in the fourth quarter, with De’Aaron Fox’s layup pulling them within a single point with just over 10 minutes left. However, the Warriors swiftly responded, as Curry and Jimmy Butler III combined for 18 points in the final quarter, ensuring victory.
Jimmy Butler III played a crucial supporting role, racking up 28 points, while Moses Moody consistently contributed 19 points on both offense and defense. This win represented the Warriors’ second victory in three games, injecting positive energy into their season after a challenging start.
On the other side of the court, Victor Wembanyama was the standout for the Spurs, recording a triple-double with 31 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists. Despite his remarkable performance, the Spurs could not withstand the Warriors’ resurgence. Stephon Castle also made his mark with 23 points and 10 assists, while Devin Vassell added 15 points. De’Aaron Fox finished with 13 points, Luke Kornet contributed 12, and Harrison Barnes scored 11, but with balanced scoring, the Spurs couldn’t hold onto their early lead, leading to the end of their three-game winning streak.
The opening quarter saw the Spurs appearing confident, establishing an eight-point lead just minutes into the game when Castle tipped in a layup. Their dominance continued as Julian Champagnie capped the first quarter with a 3-pointer, putting them ahead 28-14. They maintained this stronghold into the second quarter when Wembanyama hit a three to expand the lead to 33-17 before halftime.
However, the Warriors slowly clawed their way back into contention. Curry’s three-point play narrowed the gap to eight midway through the second quarter, though Castle responded with a powerful dunk, placing the Spurs ahead 56-40 with just over three minutes left in the half.
A pivotal moment arrived just before halftime when the Warriors rallied with a 9-0 scoring spree, featuring a five-point contribution from Curry. This surge managed to narrow the deficit to just seven points, with a halftime score of 56-49. At that juncture, Curry had already accounted for 15 points, while Moody and Butler had tallied 14 and 10 points respectively. Castle led the Spurs with 14 points and was closely followed by Wembanyama’s 13 points by halftime.
Following the break, Curry’s dominant performance persisted. His accuracy from long-range and playmaking ability elevated the Warriors, complemented by improved defensive efforts that reduced the Spurs’ scoring chances. The Warriors maintained their lead throughout the remaining game, and although the Spurs mounted some late-game efforts, they couldn’t recover from Golden State’s third-quarter explosion.
This victory bolstered the Warriors’ position in the Western Conference, proving that with Curry at the helm, they can excel. The Spurs will be looking to make adjustments ahead of their rematch on Friday.
