Qcells Suspends Operations for 1,000 Employees Due to Customs Slags

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In a significant setback for U.S. clean energy goals, solar manufacturer Qcells has announced the temporary suspension of around 1,000 employees at its Georgia facilities due to prolonged shipping delays related to U.S. customs inspections.

The firm, part of South Korea’s Hanwha Group, reported that solar cell components imported from Malaysia and South Korea are often delayed at the ports. This setback has hampered production at its Dalton and Cartersville factories—two of the largest solar panel production sites in the nation.

Previously, Qcells faced issues with its shipments under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, a law enacted in 2021 that restricts imports associated with China’s Xinjiang region. Recent shipments have begun to clear customs, but the unpredictability has compelled Qcells to cut back on production and workforce hours.

The company, which has committed $2.5 billion for establishing a comprehensive U.S.-based solar supply chain, insists it is dedicated to enhancing its domestic manufacturing capabilities. Its Cartersville plant is anticipated to start producing solar cells locally, lessening dependence on foreign supply channels.

The current furloughs reveal the increasing friction between America’s push for clean energy manufacturing and stringent import regulations aiming to secure ethical supply chains. As production issues ripple through the solar industry, this incident underscores the ongoing global supply bottlenecks that pose challenges to ambitious renewable energy initiatives.
