Cyclone Fina Strikes Darwin: Airport Closure and Power Outages Reported

Cyclone Fina Strikes Darwin: Airport Closure and Power Outages Reported

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

A severe tropical cyclone named Fina has wreaked havoc in Darwin, located in Australia’s Northern Territory, resulting in significant damage and disruption. The cyclone made landfall on Saturday, November 22, unleashing fierce winds and heavy rainfall across the region. Classified as a category three cyclone, Fina exhibited wind gusts peaking at 205 kilometers per hour before moving away from Darwin on Sunday, November 23.

Darwin International Airport was closed on Sunday due to safety issues as officials worked to ensure safe operations could resume. Authorities warned that the area was still experiencing strong winds along with heavy rain. Emergency services have advised residents to steer clear of downed power lines and refrain from any tourism activities, given the ongoing risks.

With a population of approximately 140,000, Darwin is reminded of the catastrophic Cyclone Tracy from 1974, which resulted in devastating destruction and significant loss of life. Fortunately, this time, there were no serious injuries reported, although some homes and local infrastructure sustained damage. Widespread power outages were noted, and officials are currently evaluating the full scale of the devastation.

Power and water authorities have initiated damage assessments early Sunday to identify the impacted areas and commence repair work. Category three cyclones like Fina have the potential to inflict substantial damage on structures, crops, and trees, besides causing power interruptions.

This incident follows earlier climatic disruptions in Australia, including ex-tropical cyclone Alfred, which affected Queensland in March, resulting in school closures and power failures. Officials are closely monitoring the scenario, emphasizing public safety and the prompt restoration of services in Darwin.
