David Lee, a former USA Olympic gold medalist, has successfully led the Bengaluru Torpedoes to triumph in the 2025 Prime Volleyball League (PVL), demonstrating his keen insight into the evolving landscape of Indian volleyball. With six years of experience in playing and coaching in India, Lee attributes the sport's positive momentum to the emergence of young talent.
“The younger generation is making a bigger impact at an earlier age,” stated Lee, highlighting the fresh dynamics replacing the veteran players who traditionally dominated the game. Despite India's historical challenges in international play—failing to qualify for the Olympics and securing only a few Asian medals since the 1980s—the national team's recent performance, securing silver at the CAVA Nations League this year, offers a glimmer of hope.
Lee emphasized that while Indian players are proficient in offensive techniques such as spiking and blocking, the primary hurdle remains in defense and ball control. “Countries like Japan, Korea, and China prioritize passing and defense, which is a critical area where India must improve,” he elaborated.
The advancement of the sport has been hampered by political instability within the Volleyball Federation of India (VFI), which has faced multiple suspensions in recent times. Currently, the PVL operates independently from the federation and has expanded to ten teams, celebrating four successful seasons.
Lee champions the need for an extended PVL season and prolonged national team training camps to foster consistency and international exposure, which he believes are vital for elevating Indian volleyball to compete at higher echelons.
