Deadly Earthquake Hits Eastern Afghanistan, Hundreds Reported Killed

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.0 in magnitude struck eastern Afghanistan late last night, causing massive destruction and loss of life. According to the Afghan Ministry of Interior, at least 622 people were killed and more than 1,500 others injured. The tremors shook large parts of the region, spreading panic among residents as homes and buildings collapsed. The earthquake has been described as one of the most deadly natural disasters in Afghanistan in recent years.

Location and Depth of the Quake

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 8 kilometers, which made its impact even more destructive. The epicenter was located 27 kilometers northeast of Jalalabad, a city near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. The shallow depth and proximity to populated areas increased the scale of destruction, leaving many villages and towns in ruins.

Human Losses and Injuries

The death toll of 622 people is expected to rise further as search and rescue operations continue. More than 1,500 people have been injured, many of them seriously, and hospitals in the region are overwhelmed with patients. Local authorities and aid organizations are struggling to respond to the large number of victims, while survivors search through rubble for family members and neighbors.

Widespread Panic and Fear

Residents reported that the ground shook violently for several seconds, forcing people to run into the streets in fear. Many homes, particularly those made of mud and weak construction materials, collapsed instantly. Survivors described scenes of chaos, with cries for help echoing through the night. Entire families have been buried under the debris, and many communities have been cut off due to landslides and damaged roads.

Major Destruction in Villages

The areas most affected are small villages near Jalalabad, where infrastructure is fragile and emergency services are limited. In these rural regions, houses are often built with clay and stones, which cannot withstand powerful tremors. The earthquake destroyed schools, markets, and mosques, leaving communities devastated. Many families are now homeless, sheltering in open fields under harsh conditions.

Hospitals Struggle to Cope

Hospitals and clinics in Jalalabad and surrounding districts are filled with the injured. Doctors report shortages of medical supplies, beds, and staff. Emergency wards are overcrowded, and many patients are being treated outside on the ground. Blood donations have been urgently requested to help save lives. International aid agencies are also preparing to send medical assistance to the region.

Rescue Efforts Underway

Rescue teams, including Afghan security forces and volunteers, are working tirelessly to pull survivors from under the rubble. However, the lack of heavy equipment has slowed down operations, and rescuers often rely on their bare hands or simple tools to remove debris. Time is critical as many people remain trapped under collapsed buildings, and the chances of survival decrease with every passing hour.

International Reactions and Aid

The earthquake has drawn global attention, with several countries expressing condolences and offering aid. Humanitarian organizations are preparing to provide tents, food, water, and medical assistance to the victims. Neighboring Pakistan has also expressed readiness to help, given the quake’s proximity to its border. The international community is calling for urgent support to prevent further suffering among survivors.

Survivors Share Their Pain

Local media reported heartbreaking stories from survivors. Many families lost multiple members overnight, while others remain uncertain about the fate of their loved ones. Children have been left orphaned, and entire villages have lost their homes. Survivors described the earthquake as the most terrifying moment of their lives, with some saying that the destruction looks like a war zone.

Concerns of Aftershocks

Authorities have warned that aftershocks may continue in the coming days. Aftershocks, though smaller in scale, could cause further damage to already weakened buildings and endanger ongoing rescue operations. Residents have been advised to remain outdoors and avoid unsafe structures until the risk lessens.

A Country Already in Crisis

This disaster comes at a time when Afghanistan is already facing severe economic and humanitarian crises. Food shortages, poverty, and political instability have weakened the country’s ability to respond to emergencies. The earthquake adds another layer of hardship for millions of Afghans who were already struggling to survive.

A Call for Unity and Support

Afghan leaders have called on citizens, local organizations, and the global community to unite in supporting the victims. Religious leaders have also urged people to assist affected families through donations and relief efforts. The disaster has once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger infrastructure and disaster preparedness in the country.

The earthquake in eastern Afghanistan has left behind a trail of tragedy, killing hundreds and injuring thousands. With villages destroyed and families torn apart, the focus now lies on rescue, relief, and rebuilding efforts. The world watches as Afghanistan faces yet another test of resilience. Global aid and local unity will play a crucial role in helping survivors recover from this heartbreaking disaster.
