Fentanyl Allegations in Nova Scotia Cannabis Debate Heat Up

Post by : Meena Hassan

In a recent statement, Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston alleged that certain illegal cannabis products might contain traces of fentanyl. He suggested that some users turn to underground cannabis due to its higher perceived potency compared to government-regulated options.

However, the local RCMP refuted Houston's claims, asserting that no evidence links fentanyl to any cannabis confiscated from illegal dispensaries. Houston backed his assertion by referencing discussions with a frontline police officer.

Meanwhile, Justice Minister Scott Armstrong has instructed all law enforcement bodies to focus on closing down illegal cannabis operations. He stressed that every cannabis retailer, regardless of location, must be licensed through the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC).

Indigenous groups have voiced strong objections to this directive. Tuma Wilson, a Mi’kmaw lawyer and faculty member at Acadia University, pointed out that it risks shaping negative public perceptions about those asserting their trading rights in court.

Councillor Isaiah Bernard of Potlotek First Nation emphasized that local dispensaries are vital for job creation and fostering entrepreneurship. He advocated for cooperative resolutions rather than confrontational approaches.

In a significant move, the Sipekne’katik First Nation has prohibited the Premier and two cabinet ministers from accessing their lands. They argue that the government has failed to engage in meaningful consultations and that this directive threatens Indigenous rights and autonomy.

This ongoing dispute underscores the escalating tensions between the provincial government and Indigenous communities, particularly regarding cannabis regulation and treaty rights.
