Dubai: In a riveting kickoff to the DP World ILT20 season on Tuesday, Desert Vipers claimed victory over Dubai Capitals, effectively ending their six-match losing streak with a thrilling four-wicket win at Dubai International Stadium.
Choosing to bowl first, the Vipers showcased a remarkable bowling display, limiting the Capitals to a score of 150 for 8. Bowlers Noor Ahmad, David Payne, and Khuzaima Tanveer each took two wickets, preventing the defending champions from building any substantial momentum.
In their chase of a modest total, the Vipers received a boost from a rapid half-century by Andries Gous. Together with Fakhar Zaman, Gous established a brisk 50-run opening partnership, setting the tone for the innings. Although Zaman was dismissed for 26, Gous continued his assault, reaching his fifty off just 32 balls, featuring six fours and two sixes. Despite a few quick wickets causing concern, Dan Lawrence and Khuzaima Tanveer steadied the ship and led the team to victory in 19 overs, marking the franchise's 21st win in the tournament's history—the most by any team.
The Capitals faced difficulties right from the start, languishing at 32 for 3 within the powerplay. Despite Rovman Powell's 39 and Mohammad Nabi's 29 providing some resistance, their efforts fell short, with the team unable to surpass a modest total.
This match also served as the first official event for the newly formed squads, finalized after the player auction in October. The six franchises displayed well-balanced teams, merging international talent with local players from the UAE and associated nations, including newcomers from Saudi Arabia, in accordance with the league’s squad composition guidelines.
With this confident performance, Desert Vipers have set a promising tone for the season, showcasing their determination to reclaim the title.
