A severe earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale struck northeastern Japan late Monday, injuring over 30 individuals and compelling thousands to evacuate. The tremor occurred at 23:15 local time (14:15 GMT) at a depth of 50 km, approximately 80 km from the coast of Aomori.

Initial Tsunami Alerts and Immediate Effects

Initially, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued tsunami alerts, which were subsequently lifted after wave heights reached 70 cm. Although this was deemed manageable, the alerts prompted urgent evacuations for around 90,000 people in the impacted zones.

Daily life faced significant interruptions due to the quake. Numerous train services along the northeastern shoreline were suspended, affecting thousands, while approximately 2,700 homes found themselves without power. Emergency teams operated through the night to evaluate damage and render assistance.

Government Measures

In response, the Japanese government set up a crisis management office at the prime minister's center, overseeing disaster relief operations. Authorities have advised the community to remain cautious of potential aftershocks, which may persist for a week or more.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi addressed the affected populace, encouraging them to review safety protocols in their homes and prepare for potential evacuations if further tremors occur.

Nuclear Plant Safety Assured

Electricity distributors and safety regulators have confirmed no anomalies at the Higashidori and Onagawa nuclear facilities. The Fukushima site, previously damaged during the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami of 2011, has similarly shown no issues.
