Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) hosted a high-level meeting with HE Sauli Niinistö, the former President of Finland, during the 11th World Green Economy Summit (WGES) in Dubai. HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and MD & CEO of DEWA, welcomed Niinistö after his keynote speech at the summit’s opening session. The meeting underlined Dubai’s commitment to global sustainability partnerships and its leading role in renewable energy development.
Niinistö Highlights Role of Policy and Youth
In his keynote address, Sauli Niinistö stressed the importance of strong government policies and sustainable financing in advancing the global green economy. He explained that fairness and flexibility are key to ensuring that climate policies are inclusive and widely accepted. Niinistö also placed strong emphasis on youth participation, describing it as essential for creating future-oriented solutions that protect both people and the planet.
DEWA’s Commitment to Renewable Energy
During the meeting, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer presented DEWA’s achievements and future plans in the clean energy sector. He outlined DEWA’s strategic focus on photovoltaic solar power, concentrated solar power (CSP), and advanced energy storage systems. These technologies form the backbone of Dubai’s transition towards a clean, sustainable energy mix. Al Tayer highlighted how DEWA is working to position Dubai as a global hub for renewable energy and innovation in green infrastructure.
Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park
One of the major projects shared during the meeting was the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. This project is the largest single-site solar park in the world and operates under the independent power producer (IPP) model. By 2030, the solar park will generate more than 8,000 megawatts of clean energy, while also cutting over 8.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions each year. The project represents Dubai’s long-term vision of energy sustainability and climate action.
Record Performance Benchmarks by DEWA
Al Tayer also presented DEWA’s global achievements in utility performance. The authority has achieved world-leading benchmarks, ranking first globally in 12 performance indicators. Dubai has succeeded in reducing electricity customer minutes lost to only 0.94 minutes per year, a figure that is among the lowest worldwide. Power transmission and distribution losses stand at just 2%, while water network losses are at 4.5%, both significantly lower than international averages. These results demonstrate DEWA’s efficiency and its role as a global leader in energy and water services.
Dubai’s Role in Global Sustainability
The meeting reinforced Dubai’s growing role as a leader in global sustainability efforts. Events like the World Green Economy Summit provide a platform for world leaders, industry experts, and policymakers to collaborate on practical solutions for a greener and more sustainable future. Dubai continues to showcase how innovation, investment, and international cooperation can drive meaningful change in addressing climate challenges.
A Shared Commitment to Green Progress
The dialogue between DEWA and Finland’s former President reflects a shared global commitment to sustainable development. With Dubai investing in large-scale solar projects and energy efficiency, and leaders like Niinistö advocating for inclusive climate policies, the conversation highlighted the need for collective action. Together, such efforts pave the way for building resilient economies powered by clean energy and supported by fair, youth-driven policies.
Building a Cleaner Tomorrow
The high-level discussions at WGES demonstrate how Dubai is taking a proactive role in shaping the global green economy. With landmark projects like the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park and continuous achievements in utility performance, DEWA stands as a symbol of innovation and leadership. Combined with the perspectives of global figures like Sauli Niinistö, Dubai’s vision for a sustainable future is strengthened, ensuring that its initiatives contribute to international climate goals.
