New Delhi: In response to widespread disruptions in travel triggered by a wave of flight cancellations, the Indian government has taken decisive steps against IndiGo. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has imposed a five percent reduction on IndiGo's winter schedule, resulting in the cancellation of around 110 flights daily. These slots will be redistributed among other airlines to ensure consistent airport operations.
Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu informed the Rajya Sabha that these cancellations stemmed from an "internal crisis" at IndiGo, exacerbated by the implementation of new passenger safety regulations. He reiterated the government's commitment to prioritizing the safety of all aviation stakeholders and ensuring compliance. “Significant hardships were faced by passengers due to IndiGo’s poor management of crew scheduling. We will not tolerate such occurrences and will act decisively,” Naidu stated.
The DGCA's decision follows the airline's failure to meet its approved operational target of 15,014 departures weekly under the Winter Schedule 2025, with 951 cancellations occurring in November alone. Despite operating around 2,200 domestic and international flights daily, IndiGo could not efficiently manage its aircraft despite a fleet expansion. This reduction targets high-demand routes to avoid single-flight operations in sectors where IndiGo faced difficulties.
The turmoil began with new flight safety standards aimed at mitigating pilot fatigue, which were introduced almost two years ago. These regulations require airlines to ensure more adequate rest for pilots, a crucial step towards minimizing accident risks. Although these measures were implemented to enhance safety, IndiGo’s habitual focus on maximizing aircraft use has led to staffing shortages, culminating in extensive flight cancellations. Although the DGCA temporarily eased regulations to handle immediate issues, a return to strict enforcement is now essential to avert future disruptions.
Minister Naidu also addressed the government’s broader vision for the aviation industry, suggesting India could support five major airlines while advocating for increased competition. However, his statements were met with resistance from opposition members in the Rajya Sabha, who chose to walk out during his address.
This government intervention comes after a turbulent week at airports nationwide, where numerous passengers were left stranded, disrupting travel plans for various occasions. By scaling back IndiGo’s flight schedule and reallocating flight slots, the DGCA seeks to stabilize the domestic aviation landscape and rebuild trust in India’s air travel system.
