Dileep Acquitted in Actress Assault Case by Kerala Court, Response Ignites Controversy

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In a notable ruling, the Kerala Principal District and Sessions Court, presided over by Judge Honey M Varghese, acquitted actor Dileep in the case involving the abduction and sexual assault of a leading actress. While Dileep was cleared of all criminal conspiracy charges, six other individuals were convicted, with their sentencing slated for December 12.

Dileep, a significant figure in the Malayalam film industry, faced arrest in 2017, spending three months in custody before being released on bail. Accusations against him included orchestrating the kidnapping and assault of the actress, who boasts over 80 films in her repertoire, along with several awards. The assault incident transpired in February 2017 during her travel from Thrissur to Kochi.

Post-verdict, Dileep maintained to the press that he was a victim of a conspiracy designed to tarnish his reputation and disrupt his personal life, labelling himself as “the real victim” in this matter. Kerala's Law Minister, P Rajeev, countered this narrative, asserting the survivor has not received full justice and indicating the state’s intention to appeal the decision. “We have instructed the prosecution to explore additional avenues following this development,” he remarked.

The case garnered substantial media scrutiny due to the prominence of both Dileep and the actress involved. The survivor publicly shared her traumatic experience in 2022, five years after the assault, revealing the psychological toll of being both a victim and a survivor. She disclosed that her attackers recorded the incident, presumably for blackmail purposes, and addressed the rampant victim-shaming and online abuse she endured, which focused on her morality and travel circumstances.

Prompted by public outrage, the Kerala government set up a panel led by a former High Court judge to investigate the challenges faced by women in the film sector. The Hema Committee's report, released last year, brought to light systemic problems, emphasizing the overpowering influence of men in the industry and the pervasive issue of sexual harassment.

This case is pivotal in the history of India’s film sector, underscoring the vulnerabilities faced by women in high-profile careers and the complexities surrounding justice in prominent assault cases. The acquittal verdict has incited lively debates across various media platforms, leading the state government to proceed with an appeal to uphold justice for the survivor.
