Wicked: For Good, the eagerly awaited sequel to last year’s musical success, is now out, taking fans back to the vibrant world of Oz. Released on Friday, this film continues the intersecting stories of Elphaba and Glinda, providing insight into how these beloved characters transformed into the figures known from the wider Wizard of Oz lore. Despite the high expectations following the first film’s triumph, critical reception for the sequel has been notably split. However, the performances from Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have received widespread acclaim, even as other film elements sparked mixed feedback.
This new installment further develops the origins of many recognizable characters, delivering fresh narratives for the Cowardly Lion, Scarecrow, and Tin Man, ultimately creating a darker and more emotionally nuanced experience. The adaptation stays true to the themes presented in the original literary work, which redefined the mythology of Oz with a mature lens.
Director Jon M Chu, who helmed the previous installment, sustains the visual and emotional tone established in the earlier film. Both parts were filmed back-to-back, ensuring a consistent approach to design, mood, and character arcs. Chu's expertise in musical storytelling shines throughout, reinforcing his status in the realm of grand musical adaptations. Currently, he is working on the next major musical project, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, set for a 2027 release.
While opinions on the film are varied, one consensus surrounds the performance quality of the main cast. Ariana Grande’s depiction of Glinda has garnered special attention. Critics and fans alike recognize that the sequel allows her to probe a more intricate and emotionally nuanced side of the character, with her subtle moments of doubt and conflict offering a deeper emotional connection compared to the first film. Many believe her performance positions her as a strong contender for awards this season.
Cynthia Erivo continues to impress as Elphaba, with accolades pointing to her commanding presence and outstanding vocal prowess. Her performance is a cornerstone of the film's narrative strength, balancing intensity with vulnerability. Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Bailey, and Michelle Yeoh additionally deliver commendable performances. Goldblum’s unique portrayal of the Wizard injects unexpected humor into the more serious narrative, providing fleeting moments of levity amid the film's dramatic undertones.
However, Wicked: For Good has faced some criticism. Viewers have noted a diminished musical impact compared to the first installment, which featured beloved tunes like “Popular” and “The Wizard and I.” The sequel introduces newer tracks that some find less memorable and emotionally charged, influencing perceptions of the film's pacing and vibrancy, especially among devoted fans who anticipated more standout musical segments.
Additionally, critiques target the film's tone. Several reviewers noted that the sequel feels more somber and restrained than its predecessor. What was celebrated in Part One for its lively charm and cinematic energy has transitioned into a narrative that delves into emotional struggles, political intricacies within Oz, and the gradual dismantling of pivotal relationships. While some find this shift compelling, others argue it sacrifices the magic that characterized the first film.
Pacing has also sparked debates; certain viewers felt the nearly two-hour runtime was less dynamic than expected. Compared to the faster pace of the stage version, the film adaptation has been described by some critics as stretched, with segments feeling unnecessarily prolonged. The emotional dynamic between Elphaba and Glinda, a highlight of the initial film, is perceived by some as less potent, diluting the intensity of their friendship and conflicts.
Expectations for this sequel were daunting, buoyed by the overwhelming success of the first installment, which grossed over £750 million globally and received numerous accolades for production and costume design. With such achievements setting a high bar, Wicked: For Good faced significant pressure to satisfy both ardent fans and critical expectations.
Despite mixed reviews, the Wicked film series remains a landmark in modern musical cinema. Its grand production, imaginative design, and dedication to emotional storytelling resonate strongly with audiences worldwide. While not every viewer may find the sequel exceeds its predecessor, performances by Erivo and Grande deliver an engaging addition to this reimagined tale of Oz.
