Luka Dončić Raises Alarm Over Slippery NBA Cup Court After Lakers Win

Luka Dončić Raises Alarm Over Slippery NBA Cup Court After Lakers Win

Post by : Bianca Haleem

On Tuesday night, Luka Dončić put on a spectacular show, guiding the Los Angeles Lakers to a 135-118 triumph against the Clippers. The star player notched up 43 points, 13 assists, and nine rebounds, reinforcing his status as one of the league’s elite players.

However, Dončić’s performance was overshadowed by his valid concerns regarding the Lakers’ neon yellow NBA Cup court. “It’s just slippery. It’s dangerous. I slipped. I slipped a lot of times, and you could see a lot of players slipped. And that’s dangerous, man,” he expressed following the match.

This isn’t the first time Dončić has called attention to court conditions; during the inaugural NBA Cup in 2023, he criticized the New Orleans Pelicans’ court for similar traction problems. NBA Cup courts, clad in vibrant colors and full-court designs, differ from typical wooden surfaces, potentially reducing grip and heightening the risk of slips for agile players.

Even during warmups, Dončić noted the slippery aspects of the floor, seeking a remedy, yet the situation didn't improve. Despite these hazards, he maintained a shooting accuracy exceeding 50%, skillfully avoiding the slick patches near the rim. This reflects Dončić's exceptional talent and his awareness of unsafe conditions on the court.

In light of his feedback, the NBA acted promptly. Ahead of the Lakers’ next group-stage encounter against Dončić's previous team, the Dallas Mavericks, the neon yellow court will be swapped out for a standard one. Court vendors classified the original as “unplayable” and have agreed to make repairs, marking a rare modification mid-tournament.

While Dončić's on-court prowess captured the spotlight, his emphasis on safety has prompted a significant change—reminding the league that player welfare must be prioritized, even amidst marquee events.
