DP World and ITOCHU Partner to Boost Logistics Growth in Africa

DP World, a global leader in logistics and supply chain solutions, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ITOCHU Corporation, one of Japan’s biggest and oldest trading companies. The agreement was announced at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) held in Yokohama, Japan. It marks the beginning of a deeper collaboration to develop logistics and trade infrastructure across sub-Saharan Africa.

The MoU was signed by Beat Simon, Group Chief Operating Officer of Logistics at DP World, along with senior executives from ITOCHU. Both companies agreed to explore new opportunities that will improve supply chain systems, strengthen market access, and support Japanese businesses aiming to expand into Africa.

Focus Areas of Cooperation

The agreement focuses on several important areas. First, DP World and ITOCHU will look into fleet and logistics operations to make transportation more efficient. Second, they will work on supply chain optimization, ensuring goods move smoothly from producers to markets. Third, the partnership will enhance the distribution of commodities and food products, which are vital for African economies and communities.

This cooperation is not just about moving goods. It is also about creating better connections between Africa and Japan, opening the door for Japanese companies that want to enter African markets and for African producers to access global trade more effectively.

DP World’s Presence in Africa

DP World already has a strong footprint in Africa. The company operates in 48 countries on the continent. Its network includes ports, terminals, warehouses, and trucking operations, making it one of the largest logistics players in Africa.

Over the years, DP World has invested more than $3 billion in African infrastructure projects. The company also has plans to invest another $3 billion in the next three to five years. These investments are designed to support economic growth, strengthen intra-African trade, and connect African markets more effectively to global supply chains.

ITOCHU’s Experience in Africa

ITOCHU Corporation, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, has decades of experience working in Africa. It has a long history in commodities and wholesale trade, which gives it an advantage in supporting Japanese firms looking to grow in Africa.
