DP World and ITOCHU Partner to Boost Logistics Growth in Africa

DP World and ITOCHU Partner to Boost Logistics Growth in Africa

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

DP World, a global leader in logistics and supply chain solutions, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ITOCHU Corporation, one of Japan’s biggest and oldest trading companies. The agreement was announced at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) held in Yokohama, Japan. It marks the beginning of a deeper collaboration to develop logistics and trade infrastructure across sub-Saharan Africa.

The MoU was signed by Beat Simon, Group Chief Operating Officer of Logistics at DP World, along with senior executives from ITOCHU. Both companies agreed to explore new opportunities that will improve supply chain systems, strengthen market access, and support Japanese businesses aiming to expand into Africa.

Focus Areas of Cooperation

The agreement focuses on several important areas. First, DP World and ITOCHU will look into fleet and logistics operations to make transportation more efficient. Second, they will work on supply chain optimization, ensuring goods move smoothly from producers to markets. Third, the partnership will enhance the distribution of commodities and food products, which are vital for African economies and communities.

This cooperation is not just about moving goods. It is also about creating better connections between Africa and Japan, opening the door for Japanese companies that want to enter African markets and for African producers to access global trade more effectively.

DP World’s Presence in Africa

DP World already has a strong footprint in Africa. The company operates in 48 countries on the continent. Its network includes ports, terminals, warehouses, and trucking operations, making it one of the largest logistics players in Africa.

Over the years, DP World has invested more than $3 billion in African infrastructure projects. The company also has plans to invest another $3 billion in the next three to five years. These investments are designed to support economic growth, strengthen intra-African trade, and connect African markets more effectively to global supply chains.

By building this strong base, DP World is playing a key role in making Africa a more connected and competitive region in global trade.

ITOCHU’s Experience in Africa

ITOCHU Corporation, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, has decades of experience working in Africa. The company has a diversified business portfolio covering textiles, machinery, energy, chemicals, food, and general consumer goods. It has a long history in commodities and wholesale trade, which gives it an advantage in supporting Japanese firms looking to grow in Africa.

With its commercial expertise, ITOCHU is well-positioned to help Japanese businesses navigate African markets, find opportunities, and overcome challenges. Partnering with DP World provides the infrastructure and logistics strength needed to make expansion smooth and effective.

Statements from Leaders

Highlighting the importance of this collaboration, Beat Simon, COO of Logistics at DP World, said:
“Africa is one of the most dynamic growth frontiers for global trade. This collaboration with ITOCHU reflects our shared vision to unlock value by combining DP World’s infrastructure and logistics expertise with ITOCHU’s commercial experience. Together, we will build deeper connections between Africa and Japan.”

From ITOCHU’s side, Shinya Ishizuka, CEO of Africa Bloc, stated:
“We hope this collaboration will lead to new projects between DP World and ITOCHU. More importantly, we want it to serve as a bridge between Japanese companies and African markets. This will help Japanese firms expand into Africa while creating new opportunities for African economies.”

Importance of Africa in Global Trade

Africa is increasingly seen as a major growth frontier in global trade. With its young population, rich natural resources, and growing economies, the continent is becoming more attractive to investors and companies worldwide. However, one of the biggest challenges for Africa has been its logistics and supply chain infrastructure.

By improving ports, terminals, and transport systems, companies like DP World make it easier for goods to move across borders. This reduces costs, speeds up delivery, and makes African products more competitive in global markets. For Japanese businesses, this means easier access to a wide and fast-growing consumer base.

Supporting Intra-African Trade

Another key goal of the partnership is to strengthen intra-African trade—trade between African countries. Currently, trade between nations on the continent is relatively low compared to other regions. By improving logistics, building better supply chains, and ensuring smoother transport, DP World and ITOCHU can help African countries trade more with each other.

This not only boosts economies but also makes Africa less dependent on imports from outside the continent. Stronger local and regional trade creates more jobs, encourages industrial growth, and improves food security.

Impact on Commodities and Food Distribution

One of the focus areas of the MoU is the distribution of commodities and food products. Africa faces challenges in moving agricultural goods efficiently from farms to markets. Poor infrastructure often leads to delays, spoilage, and higher costs. By improving logistics, the partnership can reduce waste, ensure food reaches markets faster, and lower costs for consumers.

For Japan, this means a more reliable supply of commodities from Africa. For Africa, it means farmers and producers will earn more because fewer products will be lost in the supply chain. This creates a win-win situation for both sides.

Building a Bridge Between Africa and Japan

The collaboration is not just about business—it is also about building stronger ties between Africa and Japan. Japanese companies often face challenges when entering new markets, especially those far from home. With DP World’s established infrastructure in Africa and ITOCHU’s commercial expertise, Japanese businesses will have a smoother entry into African markets.

This partnership will also encourage more Japanese investment in Africa, supporting local economies and creating jobs. In turn, African companies will gain better access to Japanese markets and technologies.

The MoU signed between DP World and ITOCHU is just the beginning. Both companies plan to explore a variety of projects in the coming years. These may include new port developments, expanded transport networks, advanced warehousing facilities, and technology-driven supply chain solutions.

The partnership also shows a commitment to sustainable growth. Modern logistics solutions not only make trade more efficient but also help reduce waste, optimize fuel use, and lower carbon emissions—factors that are becoming increasingly important in global trade.

A Step Toward Shared Prosperity

This agreement is more than just a business deal. It is a step toward shared prosperity for Africa and Japan. By working together, DP World and ITOCHU can help African economies grow, make supply chains stronger, and open new opportunities for Japanese companies. The partnership reflects a global trend of deeper cooperation between countries and businesses to create a more connected and sustainable future.

As DP World and ITOCHU move forward, Africa will stand to benefit from greater investments, stronger infrastructure, and better access to global markets. For Japan, this partnership ensures a strong presence in one of the fastest-growing regions of the world.
