DP World has signed an important agreement with the Government of Afghanistan to develop and manage the country’s main land border points at Torkham and Hairatan. This project aims to modernise Afghanistan’s key trade gateways and strengthen its role as a major transit route connecting Central and South Asia. Torkham and Hairatan are vital for commerce with neighbouring countries, handling billions of dollars in trade annually, including over USD 1.6 billion with Pakistan in 2024. Despite this, limited infrastructure and manual processes have slowed trade, making upgrades crucial for smoother and more secure border operations.
The agreement, set up as a Public–Private Partnership (PPP), will see DP World carry out a detailed technical and financial study before finalising the concession. Planned upgrades include modern infrastructure, advanced cargo handling systems, and digitalised border processes to make trade faster, safer, and more efficient. The deal was signed by Alhaj Mufti Abdul Mateen Saeed, Deputy Minister of Revenue and Customs of Afghanistan, and Nasser Al Neyadi, Executive Vice-President of DP World.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman and Group CEO of DP World, said that efficient trade corridors are key to economic growth. He added that modernising Afghanistan’s borders will unlock greater potential for trade and regional development, providing opportunities for stability and economic progress.
The project will also focus on creating local jobs, developing skills, and collaborating closely with national partners. The Afghan government will continue to manage customs, immigration, security, and regulatory oversight, working with DP World to ensure smooth and secure operations at these vital trade points.
This partnership highlights Afghanistan’s commitment to improving trade infrastructure and positions DP World as a strategic partner in boosting regional connectivity and economic growth.
