Driver Indicted Following Fatal Crash Involving Anthony Joshua in Nigeria

Post by : Meena Hassan

Authorities in Nigeria have formally indicted the driver of a vehicle carrying British boxing icon Anthony Joshua for reckless and dangerous driving, stemming from a fatal road accident in Ogun State.

The accused, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was behind the wheel of a Lexus SUV on Monday when it collided with a stationary truck on the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway. Joshua was traveling with his associates, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, at the time of the incident.

According to police reports and state officials, the crash was catastrophic, leading to the deaths of Ayodele and Ghami immediately. Both Joshua and Kayode survived with minor injuries and were subsequently hospitalized before being released.

Kayode was apprehended by police following his discharge from the hospital on Thursday. He has been charged formally with reckless and dangerous driving, with a court granting him bail set at five million naira, which necessitates two sureties. He will remain in custody until all bail conditions are satisfied.

Initial investigations by traffic officials suggest the SUV was traveling at dangerously high speeds prior to the collision. Moreover, eyewitness accounts indicate a tyre failure occurred, resulting in the driver losing control before impacting the parked truck.

After his hospital discharge, Anthony Joshua, together with his mother, visited a funeral home to pay respects as arrangements were made for the bodies of his friends. Authorities have suggested that efforts to repatriate the remains to the UK may already be underway.

This heartbreaking event has reignited discussions on road safety across Nigeria's main highways, particularly highlighting the hazards posed by speeding and stationary vehicles. As of now, Anthony Joshua's current location remains undisclosed, and his representaives have yet to issue further comments.
