A significant drone event at Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport in Sweden caused a complete halt to air traffic on Thursday evening, leading authorities to initiate a probe into suspected sabotage. Following the temporary closure, flights are set to recommence after major interruptions at the country's second-largest airport.
Authorities reported that one or more drones were spotted near Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport on the west coast around 16:41 GMT, leading to the rerouting or cancellation of over a dozen flights as safety measures were put in place.
The police quickly initiated an investigation into what they termed suspected aviation sabotage. “We are investigating a suspected case of aviation sabotage,” confirmed a police spokesperson. Later in the evening, airport operator Swedavia announced that conditions had stabilized. “Police have indicated the situation is resolved, and we plan to resume traffic,” stated Swedavia.
This drone-related incident adds to a troubling series of similar occurrences across Europe, intensifying security fears. Some officials and analysts have suggested that these may be linked to hybrid warfare tactics allegedly associated with Russia, although Moscow has denied any ties.
Earlier this week, multiple drone sightings in Belgium prompted temporary airport closures and even affected a military air base, which the defense minister referred to as a “coordinated attack.” Furthermore, Norwegian and Danish authorities have reported similar drone-related incidents, leading to temporary shutdowns at significant airports like Oslo and Copenhagen.
Recently, Norwegian police concluded an investigation regarding drone activity that led to Oslo Airport’s temporary closure in September due to a lack of evidence. Denmark also recorded similar airport interruptions in September concerning suspected drone actions.
As airspace security continues to raise alarms across Europe, aviation authorities are reassessing measures to counter drone-related threats that can halt essential transportation networks. The incident in Gothenburg highlights how a single drone sighting can disrupt hundreds of passengers and evoke national security alerts.
While Swedish authorities have not identified those responsible for the recent drone activities, the investigation aims to ascertain whether the event was an intentional act of sabotage or an unlawful drone operation.
With air traffic gradually resuming and increased security protocols now enforced, Swedish officials are diligently monitoring the situation to deter future occurrences.
