Dubai Authorities Apologise After False Missile Alert Alarms Residents

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Residents across Dubai received an emergency mobile alert warning of an incoming missile on Friday, causing concern before authorities quickly issued an all-clear. Officials later instructed the public to disregard the earlier warning, confirming that the alert had been sent in error.

According to the reports, the warning appeared on residents' mobile phones, but authorities did not immediately explain what had triggered the missile alert. Within minutes, an all-clear notification was issued, followed by another message advising people to ignore the previous warning.

The unexpected notification surprised many residents as it was the first missile-related mobile alert issued in several weeks following the ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

Authorities Confirm Technical Malfunction

Later on Friday, the UAE's National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) confirmed that the alert resulted from a technical problem in the country's early warning system.

In a statement posted on X, the authority apologised for the incident. "The National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority and the relevant entities apologise for this unintentional technical malfunction."

The statement added that the "sudden technical malfunction in the early warning system" had been identified and resolved by the relevant authorities.

Alert Comes After Drone Attack Near Oman

The false alert came a day after Iran launched a drone attack targeting the Singapore-flagged cargo ship Ever Lovely near the coast of Oman.

Although no connection between the two events was announced, the timing of the emergency notification heightened public concern.

UAE and Iran Hold Diplomatic Talks

Shortly after the false alert, UAE officials announced that Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan held a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

According to the Emirati statement, Sheikh Abdullah stressed that the UAE "emphasised the importance of full commitment" to the interim agreement between Iran and the United States.

The statement further said: "Serious diplomacy and responsible dialogue are the optimal path for addressing all regional and international crises."

Marco Rubio Visits Abu Dhabi

The incident also came during a regional diplomatic effort involving the United States. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Abu Dhabi this week as part of a Gulf tour aimed at reassuring countries in the region regarding ongoing peace talks with Iran. The UAE authorities have since confirmed that the technical issue behind the false missile alert has been resolved and that the emergency warning system is functioning normally.

Why did Dubai residents receive a missile alert?

The UAE authorities said the emergency warning was triggered by an unintentional technical malfunction in the country's early warning system.

Was there an actual missile attack on Dubai?

No. Authorities later issued an all-clear and instructed residents to disregard the earlier warning.

What did UAE authorities say about the false alert?

NCEMA apologised for the incident and confirmed that the technical problem had been resolved.

Did the alert come during regional tensions?

Yes. The false alert came a day after Iran launched a drone attack on the Singapore-flagged cargo ship Ever Lovely near the coast of Oman.
