The film Kaantha, featuring Dulquer Salmaan, Bhagyashri Borse, and Rana Daggubati, has debuted to favorable reviews this month. With total earnings reaching ₹19.95 crore, this Tamil drama transports audiences back to 1950s Madras, depicting the rise of superstar T. K. Mahadevan (Dulquer Salmaan) as he embarks on shooting Tamil cinema's first horror movie, Saantha.
In a conversation with Sudhir Srinivasan, both director Selvamani Selvaraj and actress Bhagyashri Borse discussed some of the film’s most gripping sequences. Bhagyashri opened up about her initial hesitations regarding a pivotal scene where she slaps Dulquer for the first time, stating:
"I was indeed a bit unsure behind the scenes about performing it, yet I believe he (Dulquer) was aiming for absolute perfection. We really committed to it, and he was willing to endure that to elicit the right performance from him. I respect that. However, I was quite nervous—it was the first time I'd ever done such a thing."
Selvamani further noted that Dulquer’s face turned red post-scene, showcasing the actor's commitment and professionalism.
The narrative primarily revolves around the friction between T. K. Mahadevan and his previous mentor, Ayya (Samuthirakani), detailing how their rivalry affects those around them. Bhagyashri plays the role of Kumari, an aspiring actress, while Rana Daggubati takes on the character of Inspector Phoenix, enriching the storyline.
Kaantha is under the direction of Selvamani and produced by Dulquer Salmaan and Rana Daggubati through Wayfarer Films and Spirit Media. The film has gained accolades for its stunning cinematography and precision in showcasing the essence of 1950s Madras, offering a nostalgic and richly immersive viewing experience.
Overall, Kaantha distinguishes itself through excellent performances and direction while diving into the roots of early horror cinema in Tamil Nadu, showcasing the commitment of its cast. The dynamic between Dulquer Salmaan and Bhagyashri Borse, coupled with Rana Daggubati's impactful presence, ensures a captivating cinematic journey.
