6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southeastern Taiwan Without Damage

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

A significant earthquake registering 6.1 on the Richter scale occurred in Taitung, a coastal county in southeastern Taiwan, this Wednesday. The quake, as noted by Taiwan's weather administration, was measured at a depth of 11.9 km (7.39 miles).

The capital city, Taipei, felt the tremors, but officials confirmed that there were no immediate reports of damages or injuries. The National Fire Agency indicated that no major incidents had arisen across the island.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the predominant chip producer in Taiwan, announced that the earthquake's intensity did not warrant factory evacuations, and operations continued as usual.

Being positioned at the crossroads of two tectonic plates, Taiwan is inherently susceptible to seismic activities. Historical records show the island has faced catastrophic earthquakes, such as the 7.3 magnitude quake in 1999 that resulted in over 2,000 fatalities, and a 6.4 magnitude quake in 2016 that took more than 100 lives.

Officials are closely observing the situation and have advised residents to stay vigilant for potential aftershocks. Emergency services are prepared for quick responses in Taitung and nearby locations if the situation changes.

Despite the earthquake’s magnitude, preliminary assessments indicate that Taiwan’s buildings and infrastructure have withstood the tremor well, underscoring the nation’s readiness for natural seismic events.
