Coriander is a staple herb in Indian cuisine, known for enhancing flavors and adding visual appeal to dishes. However, many struggle with its tendency to wilt or spoil shortly after purchase, turning soft and unusable within just days.
To tackle this issue, digital creator and chef Kabir Chugh shared two effective kitchen techniques that anyone can replicate at home in a recent viral video. He mentions that despite years in the culinary field, he learned one of these tricks from his mentor in Dubai and has found great success with it.
Technique 1: The Restaurant Secret
Opening the video, Chef Kabir addresses a viewer's inquiry:
“What’s the best way to store coriander?”
Chuckling, he remarks how this is a common question among many home cooks. He dives into the first method used in high-end restaurant kitchens.
Start by removing any spoiled leaves from the coriander.
Trim the roots.
Lay a clean paper towel on a flat surface.
Spread the coriander across the towel and mist lightly with water.
Gently wrap the coriander in the towel.
Store it in a container or box in the refrigerator.
Chef Kabir points out that refrigerators can often cause herbs to dry out, leading to that dull appearance. However, a light mist of water on the towel keeps the coriander hydrated without excessive moisture. This method helps retain the freshness for many days.
He advises against over-watering as it can lead to spoilage, emphasizing the importance of checking for any old or wilted leaves before storage.
Technique 2: The 'Real Tariqa' Method
Following up on the initial technique, Chef Kabir calls it “ordinary” and reveals an even more effective solution that doesn’t require refrigeration.
This method is quite simple:
Trim the coriander roots.
Fill a clear jar or glass with clean water.
Place the coriander upright in the jar like you would with a potted plant.
Put it in a cool area with gentle sunlight.
According to Kabir, since the coriander remains a live plant, it will absorb water from the bottom and stay crisp, green, and fresh for an extended time. He showcases how vibrant the coriander looks in the video, using the term “khila khila” (fresh and thriving).
However, he emphasizes a few critical notes:
Do not position the jar near a gas stove or any heated environment.
Excess heat will cause the coriander to dry out and perish.
Change the water every two days to ensure it remains clean and safe.
Why These Techniques are Effective
People often store coriander in plastic bags in the fridge, which can trap moisture and lead to rapid spoilage. Chef Kabir’s methods are effective because they maximize air circulation, water management, and space.
The first technique maintains balanced moisture levels inside the fridge.
The second allows coriander to thrive as if it were still growing.
Both methods are simple, cost-effective, and utilize materials commonly found in households.
A Valuable Tip for Every Kitchen
While fresh coriander elevates the taste of meals, discarding wilted leaves frequently can be frustrating and wasteful. These handy tips from Chef Kabir can assist families in saving money, minimizing waste, and enjoying fresh herbs for longer periods.
