Eight in Calgary Achieves Second Place in North America’s Restaurant Rankings

Post by : Shweta

Calgary's vibrant culinary landscape has gained significant international acclaim, as the restaurant Eight has been officially ranked as the second-best eatery in North America. This prestigious ranking was revealed at the unveiling of the 2026 edition of North America’s 50 Best Restaurants, a hallmark reference in the global culinary community. Not only did Eight earn the No. 2 spot, but it also received the Highest New Entry Award, marking a tremendous highlight in this year's rankings.

This recognition puts Eight ahead of numerous renowned dining establishments across both Canada and the United States, with the only higher-ranked venue being Smyth from Chicago that secured the top position. Food experts and critics have hailed Eight's successful debut as one of the most remarkable developments in the history of the rankings.

Under the leadership of Calgary chef Darren MacLean, Eight is famous for its innovative take on Canadian cuisine. The establishment emphasizes locally sourced ingredients, ensuring a personal dining atmosphere by serving a limited number of guests at each sitting. Its menu showcases Canadian products and culinary traditions while giving them a contemporary twist. The restaurant is recognized for its effort to carve out a unique Canadian fine-dining identity that honors local culture.

The announcement took place at the North America’s 50 Best Restaurants awards event in New Orleans. This annual list shines a spotlight on exceptional restaurants from the U.S., Canada, and the Caribbean. This year's rankings boasted establishments from 20 different cities, reflecting the increasing diversity and competitive spirit of North America's dining scene.

The success of Eight resonates as a significant triumph for Canada’s culinary landscape. With 14 Canadian restaurants making it to the Top 50, major cities like Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Whistler, and Calgary featured prominently. Culinary experts remarked that these results showcase Canada's emergence as a dynamic food destination in North America.

The acknowledgment is particularly significant for Calgary, a city often overlooked in global culinary conversations. While major urban centers such as Toronto, Montreal, New York, and Los Angeles have historically led restaurant listings, Eight’s success has cast Calgary in a new light. Observers speculate that this ranking could enhance food tourism in the city, further elevating Alberta's culinary reputation.

As stated by the ranking organizers, the evaluations are conducted by a voting academy comprised of chefs, food writers, restaurateurs, and culinary specialists. This list is revered as one of the most impactful awards in the dining industry, often influencing restaurants' international standing and attracting diners in search of exceptional culinary experiences.

For Chef Darren MacLean and his dedicated team, this recognition serves as a pivotal milestone. The acknowledgment places Eight in the upper echelons of North America's dining establishments and underscores the growing recognition of Canadian chefs worldwide. As Calgary garners more global attention, Eight is poised to become one of the region's premier dining destinations in the upcoming months.
