Eight Detained in Investigation of Hong Kong Fire That Claimed 128 Lives

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

The anti-corruption watchdog in Hong Kong has taken eight individuals into custody concerning the renovation of high-rise apartments ravaged by a catastrophic fire, which led to the deaths of 128 residents. This decisive action is part of an urgent inquiry to investigate any corrupt practices involved in the incident.

The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) reported that the detained include seven men and one woman, all aged between 40 and 63. Those arrested encompass scaffolding subcontractors, executives from an engineering consultancy, and project managers overseeing the renovation.

Arrests were executed on Friday, following the tragic fire that engulfed the residential tower a day earlier. The ICAC has stated that officers conducted searches at the premises of those apprehended, confiscating vital documents, bank statements, and files associated with the renovation. These materials will undergo thorough scrutiny to assess whether misconduct or negligence contributed to the tragedy.

This fire stands as one of the most lethal in Hong Kong in recent memory, sparking grave concerns regarding building safety, regulatory oversight, and accountability. Families affected by this disaster, along with the broader community, are calling for transparency in the investigation to reveal lapses during the renovation that may have compromised safety measures.

The ICAC highlighted that the inquiry remains active, promising further actions as additional evidence comes to light. Officials emphasized their commitment to rigorously examine every element of the renovation to establish clear accountability.
