Around 20 fans watched England complete their first evening practice session at the Gabba before the second day-night Ashes Test. The Gabba’s outdoor nets are famous because spectators can see bowlers from right behind the batter. Many focused on the lane near Main Street, where fast bowlers Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse, and Gus Atkinson bowled with the pink ball.
However, the biggest attention was on the far net, where spinners Shoaib Bashir and Will Jacks bowled to captain Ben Stokes. Both are competing for the final spot in England’s playing XI for the upcoming Test.
England already know that Mark Wood will miss the second Test due to his knee issue. The team hopes he will recover in time for the Adelaide Test. Other than Wood, the remaining ten players from the first Test defeat in Perth are likely to keep their spots.
If England want to play four fast bowlers again, Josh Tongue is the closest replacement for Wood. But early signs suggest they may choose a spinner this time. The pink Kookaburra ball tends to become soft earlier than the traditional red ball, which could make spin more important in this Test.
Bashir and Jacks have had different journeys to this moment. Bashir has been Stokes’ main spinner since earning a surprise call-up for the India tour in early 2024. He has already taken 68 wickets in 19 Tests. His high release point and strong revolutions on the ball make him effective on Australian pitches, which often do not support traditional English finger spin.
Jacks, on the other hand, first played Test cricket in Pakistan in 2022. He took six wickets on debut and also impressed with his batting, even playing at No. 3 when needed. His value lies in being an allrounder who can bowl offspin and bat aggressively in any top-order position. His tall action and confidence with the ball helped him earn another chance on this tour.
Reports suggest Bashir is slightly ahead in the race, but in Monday’s practice Jacks bowled better. Nets cannot fully predict match situations, and this session was mainly for the batters to adjust to day-night conditions. Stokes and his teammates spent time watching how the ball behaved under floodlights and how the pitch surface changed.
History shows visiting spinners have struggled with the pink ball in Australia, taking only 28 wickets at a high average. Even Joe Root, who is normally a part-time bowler, sits among the top performers with three wickets in Adelaide in 2021–22. India’s R Ashwin leads the list with six wickets in day-night Tests in Australia.
On the other hand, Australia’s top spinner Nathan Lyon has been extremely successful with 43 wickets in home pink-ball Tests. England might look at this and feel a spinner is essential. But there is also another lesson from last year’s day-night match at the Gabba. West Indies offspinner Kevin Sinclair played a key role with both bat and ball in helping his team beat Australia. His impact, especially with the bat, may strengthen Jacks’ case, as he offers similar all-round value.
England’s players will continue studying past pink-ball matches and learning from their own games. Most of England’s top five batters have played a pink-ball Test, but wicketkeeper Jamie Smith will be experiencing one for the first time.
Brydon Carse said that the evening session will be important, as the ball tends to swing more when it is newer. England expect a big, loud crowd for the match and are preparing for a tough challenge. He added that England have studied Australia’s success with the pink ball and plan to use similar strategies in order to make early breakthroughs.
With final decisions expected soon, the choice between Bashir and Jacks will be crucial as England aim to level the series.
