England have suffered another major setback in Australia, as fast bowler Mark Wood has been ruled out of the remainder of the Ashes series. His old knee injury returned after the first Test, leaving him unable to continue. Wood, who worked hard for seven months of intense rehab, underwent surgery earlier this year to get fit for the tour. He bowled 11 overs in the opening Test but missed the second Test due to increasing pain.
Wood said he was heartbroken to leave the series midway, especially after putting in so much effort to return to Test cricket. He shared that despite strong medical treatment and injections, the injury became worse than expected. His recent appearances wearing a knee brace suggested that the issue was serious. Wood admitted he had arrived with high hopes of making a strong impact, but the situation was beyond his control.
England have added Matthew Fisher from Surrey as his replacement. Fisher, who earned his only Test cap in 2022, has been part of the shadow squad during this tour. However, it is unclear whether he will get a place in the playing XI, as Josh Tongue and Matthew Potts are already waiting for their chance.
With this setback, questions also rise about Wood’s future. Even though he is contracted till next September, his frequent injuries raise doubts over how long his international career can continue. If this proves to be the final phase of his career, Wood will still be remembered as an Ashes winner and a World Champion in both the 2019 ODI World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup.
Australia also face an injury blow with Josh Hazlewood ruled out of the entire series due to an Achilles issue. Pat Cummins, recovering from a back injury, is expected to return for the third Test in Adelaide. Mitchell Starc has stepped up strongly in their absence, taking 18 wickets so far.
Despite the difficulties, Wood encouraged England fans to stay hopeful. He promised to attempt another comeback and said he still believes England can fight back. Ending his message with determination, he wrote: “Never give in.”
England, currently 2-0 behind, are using their short break in Noosa to recover and plan their strategy. The challenge ahead is tough, but the team believes they can still turn the Ashes around.
