England Aims for Victory in Perth as Australia Faces Injury Struggles

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

As the Ashes series kicks off in Perth this Friday, England steps onto the field with newfound optimism, eager to seize a strong start in the five-match face-off. Anticipation builds from their recent form and Australia's absence of key fast bowlers due to injuries. England hasn't claimed victory in the opening Ashes Test on Australian soil for nearly four decades, and their last triumph in Perth dates back to 1978. Nevertheless, this trip feels different, fueling hopes of breaking those long-standing streaks.

Injuries cast a shadow over Australia, with Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood both sidelined. Their combined tally of 604 Test wickets makes their absence a significant setback for the home side. The selectors likely didn't foresee this scenario before commencing the much-anticipated contest. Steve Smith will captain the team in Cummins' place.

To plug the gaps left by the injured duo, Australia will rely on Scott Boland and newcomer Brendan Doggett. Boland made headlines by taking seven wickets on debut in the 2021/22 Ashes series, while Doggett, whose debut appearance awaits, comes in with solid domestic credentials.

England, while familiar with limited-overs action at the modern Perth Stadium, will approach this Test as their first there. Past encounters have not been kind, especially at the former WACA ground, where England suffered a series of losses, with their latest outing in 2017 ending in a crushing defeat that handed Australia the Ashes.

Joe Root stands as the lone survivor from the painful 4-0 defeat, as most of Ben Stokes' squad approaches this fresh venue. Many players are yet to experience Test cricket in Australia. Debutant paceman Gus Atkinson expressed optimism, stating he carries “no scars,” suggesting a fresh perspective might turn into an advantage for the team.

Realizing the importance of a strong beginning, England recognizes that they've never secured an Ashes series win in Australia after falling behind 1-0, a feat only accomplished once in the 1954/55 series under Len Hutton. The last series kicked off poorly, with Rory Burns dismissed for a golden duck. England crumbled for 147 runs and subsequently lost that match by nine wickets, ultimately finishing the series 4-0.

Mitchell Starc returns to lead Australia's charge, bringing his experience and potency despite concerns of age. At 35, he remains a formidable force, stating that injuries are commonplace in fast bowling, but he believes in Australia’s depth to adapt. He commended Boland and Doggett for their current performances.

While England has yet to disclose their bowling lineup, they possess an array of options. Fans eagerly anticipate a thrilling showdown between Jofra Archer and Steve Smith, reminiscent of their past intense encounters, including a memorable moment at Lord's in 2019.

In preparation, Archer, Mark Wood, Gus Atkinson, and Josh Tongue showcased notable performances during their warm-up match, hinting that England is contemplating the strategy of deploying four fast bowlers. Joe Root also contributed with some spin, while specialist spinner Shoaib Bashir played for the England Lions.

Questions persist within Australia’s batting lineup, with Marnus Labuschagne returning after a strong domestic campaign. The new opener, Jake Weatherald, is set to make his Test debut, stepping in for Sam Konstas. All-rounder Cameron Green appears fit post-back surgery, although Beau Webster may be left out. Should Green play, Labuschagne could revert to his preferred number three position, while Weatherald takes on the new ball.

With Australia hampered by injuries and England entering with a revitalized mindset, this opening Test dares to promise excitement. Both teams' lineups are fluid, paving the way for unexpected performances in what could be England’s best shot in years to subvert age-old losing patterns and lay claim to the Ashes right from the gate.
