England, who have fallen 2-0 behind in the Ashes after less than a week of cricket, are taking a short break in the resort town of Noosa before preparing for the crucial Test in Adelaide. The team received criticism for their relaxed tour preparation and lack of practice matches, especially after their heavy eight-wicket defeat to Australia at the Gabba. Head coach Brendon McCullum admitted that team management may have made mistakes, but he believes they trained too much rather than too little.
The Noosa break was already planned, and McCullum said it would help the players relax after an intense period. During the break, the squad will spend time together informally, play golf, and enjoy the Sunshine Coast before returning to training. England had earlier played golf in Western Australia before suffering another big defeat in Perth. McCullum said this break would help “let the dust settle” and give the team space to plan their comeback in the series.
Despite the disappointing results, players have enjoyed some off-field fun, with some riding e-scooters in Brisbane without helmets. Fast bowler Jofra Archer even brought his own pillow to the Gabba to catch some rest before day three. However, his rest was delayed when Mitchell Starc smashed 77 runs and Australia’s lower order pushed their total to 511.
Captain Ben Stokes urged his team to stay positive, saying players must choose whether they want to “train to train” or “train to dominate.” But major concerns remain for England. Questions continue about whether Ollie Pope is the right choice at number three, why Harry Brook keeps losing his wicket cheaply, and whether spinner Shoaib Bashir is ready for Adelaide after going wicketless for 115 runs in the England Lions match. England also dropped five catches in Australia’s first innings at the Gabba, adding to pressure on the team.
Stokes admitted he does not understand why England lose key pressure moments against Australia. With the series slipping away, the Test in Adelaide has become must-win. Fans are now waiting to see if this short break helps the players reset mentally and physically. Stokes said the team must be “very good physically and mentally” in Adelaide, and taking time in Noosa could help them regain focus and confidence.
