Fast bowler Josh Tongue is confident that England is adequately prepared for the upcoming Ashes series in Australia, asserting that their formidable bowling lineup offers them a strong chance to break their lengthy winless streak on Australian soil. England's last Ashes victory occurred in 2015, and they have not secured a series win in Australia since 2011, with their last three tours resulting in significant losses. However, Tongue believes this squad has the capability to turn their fortunes around.
The opening Test is set to commence on Friday in Perth. England’s preparations included just one warm-up match against the England Lions at Lilac Hill, a lack of extensive practice that has faced some criticism from former players and commentators. Regardless of this limited matchup, Tongue remains optimistic about the team's readiness.
In comments to reporters on Tuesday, Tongue expressed, “It feels very exciting. We’ve had a good build-up. A few of us were in New Zealand beforehand prepping for this. I feel like we’ve had good prep.” He pointed out the strength of the English bowling group, featuring Jofra Archer and Mark Wood, whom he referred to as the “X Factor” of the team.
Tongue remarked that the fast, bouncy tracks in Australia complement the team’s bowling style. “The pace, the bouncy wickets definitely help the faster bowlers and the skills that we’ve got as a group. I think we can give it a good shot,” he elaborated. His remarks convey England's belief in their ability to contend with Australia despite previous challenges faced in winning on Australian turf.
A boost for the opening Test comes with the news that Australian captain Pat Cummins and veteran fast bowler Josh Hazlewood are both out due to injuries. However, wicket-keeper-batter Jamie Smith reminded everyone that Australia remains a formidable opponent. “I’d still feel they’ve got a dominant attack... Obviously the two guys missing, obviously world-class players,” said the 25-year-old Smith.
Smith further highlighted that the replacements in the Australian squad boast impressive skills as well. “But any time you play Australia, you know that the guys coming in are also fantastic players as well. You show a lot of respect to the guys that are missing out and the guys coming in just trying to focus on, you know what we can do well, leading up to this first Test,” he stated.
England's confidence is bolstered by the depth of their bowling attack and the blend of experience and pace within the squad. Players like Tongue, Archer, and Wood are expected to take full advantage of the Australian conditions, aiming to apply pressure on the local team. The series will be a test of each side's adaptation and performance under pressure, particularly in Perth, renowned for its quick, bouncy pitch.
As the Ashes series looms, England's attention is firmly on preparation, teamwork, and maximizing their bowling strengths. With key Australian players sidelined and their own bowling talents in excellent shape, England is determined to challenge Australia’s longstanding supremacy in the series and initiate their campaign with a competitive first Test.
