Ethiopian Volcano Disruption: Ash Cloud Affects Flights in India

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

The Hayli Gubbi volcano, previously dormant, recently erupted in northern Ethiopia, leading to a reduction in volcanic activity after several days marked by significant devastation in adjacent communities. Villages in the Afdera district of the Afar region have been enveloped by thick volcanic ash, resulting in health issues and shortages of livestock.

Residents are experiencing respiratory problems due to ash in the atmosphere, while local animals are suffering as pastures and water sources became obscured by ash. Mobile health teams have been dispatched to areas hardest hit, including Fia and Nemma-Gubi, to assist local populations.

The ash cloud has moved extensively because of strong winds, traversing the Red Sea and affecting regions in Yemen, Oman, and the Arabian Sea before reaching parts of northern and western India. This situation has prompted several cancellations and delays of international flights, primarily affecting carriers like Air India and Akasa Air, particularly those heading to Middle Eastern locales such as Jeddah, Kuwait, and Abu Dhabi.

At New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, at least seven international flights faced cancellations, while over a dozen experienced delays due to safety concerns tied to the ash cloud. Aviation authorities are conducting comprehensive inspections on aircraft that have operated in these regions.

Geologists point out that Ethiopia is situated in an active rift zone where geological disturbances, including earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, frequently occur. Notably, this marks the Hayli Gubbi volcano's first eruption in a span of 10,000 years. Experts anticipate that this eruption will likely diminish shortly.

Indian meteorologists have indicated that the ash cloud is drifting east towards China, with expectations for clearer skies above India by late Tuesday, allowing for the resumption of normal conditions.

This eruption underscores the persistent dangers faced by populations in proximity to geological hotspots and demonstrates the far-reaching ramifications of such natural occurrences, which affect both public health and international air travel.
