Etihad Airways has officially launched daily flights connecting Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) with Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD). The inaugural flights operated at full capacity in both directions, highlighting strong travel demand between the UAE and Ethiopia.
Part of a Strategic Joint Venture
The launch coincides with the activation of Etihad’s landmark Joint Venture with Ethiopian Airlines. Announced earlier this year, the agreement enhances cooperation between the two flag carriers, offering guests more seamless travel options across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
Enhanced Connectivity and Passenger Convenience
Through coordinated schedules and joint route development, passengers now have more choices and convenient connections. The partnership also enables collaboration in areas such as loyalty programmes, training, and cargo, reflecting both airlines’ commitment to delivering a connected travel experience.
Access to Expanded Network
With the new route, Etihad guests can reach over 55 destinations across 33 African countries via Ethiopian Airlines’ hub in Addis Ababa. Conversely, Ethiopian Airlines customers now have streamlined access to over 20 destinations across Asia, Australia, and the Middle East through Abu Dhabi.
Growing African Presence
The Addis Ababa launch is a key pillar of Etihad’s expanding footprint in Africa. In 2025, the airline is increasing its services with additional flights to Nairobi, growing to 14 weekly by December, and enhanced frequencies to Casablanca and Johannesburg. Etihad is also partnering with Air Seychelles to broaden regional access.
New North African Destinations
Continuing its strategic growth, Etihad plans to introduce new destinations in North Africa. Tunis and Algiers are set to join the airline’s network next month, further strengthening connectivity between the UAE and the African continent.
Commitment to Trade and Cultural Links
Beyond passenger travel, the Etihad-Ethiopian Airlines Joint Venture aims to support trade, tourism, and cultural links between the UAE and African countries. This collaboration reinforces both airlines’ role in fostering economic and social engagement across the regions.
The Addis Ababa service reflects Etihad’s broader strategy to expand its African network while providing passengers with world-class connectivity. Through continued partnerships and route enhancements, the airline is committed to making travel more efficient and accessible for global travellers.
