The European Union (EU) has strongly condemned Iran’s recent attacks on several countries in the region, calling them a serious violation of sovereignty and an unacceptable escalation that threatens regional security and stability.
In a statement issued after an emergency meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, the bloc urged Tehran to immediately stop what it described as indiscriminate strikes and avoid any further actions that could widen the conflict.
The meeting focused on the fast-moving developments in the Middle East and their possible impact on regional security, global energy supplies, and international maritime navigation. The EU also signalled that it may consider imposing additional sanctions on Iran if the situation continues to escalate.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, said the bloc is following developments in Iran and the wider Middle East with deep concern. She reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to maintaining regional stability, upholding international law, and protecting its own security interests.
Kallas noted that the EU has already adopted extensive sanctions in response to the actions of the Iranian authorities and warned that further measures could be taken if needed.
The EU called for maximum restraint from all sides, stressing the importance of protecting civilians and fully respecting international law, including the principles of the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian law. It warned that the Middle East could suffer serious consequences if the conflict becomes prolonged.
The bloc also expressed solidarity with regional partners that have been attacked or affected by the recent developments and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding civilian lives.
In addition, the EU stressed that Iran must fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency and adhere to its legal obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement. Nuclear safety was described as a top priority, along with maintaining maritime security and respecting freedom of navigation.
