In a heartfelt farewell to their youngest victim, 10-year-old Matilda, the family made a poignant appeal to the community on Thursday. They urged everyone not to react with anger to her untimely death, but rather to embrace love and unity.
Tragically, Matilda was among 15 individuals who lost their lives when gunmen opened fire during a peaceful Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney. This shocking event has left numerous families devastated across the nation.
Incident Overview
The unthinkable attack occurred on Sunday night at a gathering intended for prayer and community. The tranquility was shattered when two assailants opened fire into the crowd, resulting in immediate casualties, including several children and elderly attendees.
This incident stands as the most lethal attack in Australia since the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, which claimed the lives of 35 individuals.
Matilda's Final Tribute
Matilda's funeral took place on Thursday in Sydney, drawing a flood of mourners, including community leaders, friends, and family members who gathered to honor her memory.
During the service, Matilda’s aunt, Lina Chernykh, expressed the family’s profound sorrow but emphasized their desire to remember Matilda’s spirit of joy and her loving nature.
“Take your anger and spread joy in memory of my lovely niece,” she urged. “I hope she’s become an angel, sending love to all.”
Remembering a Joyful Spirit
Mourners wore bee-shaped items in tribute, reflecting Matilda's great affection for the insects. The atmosphere was filled with tears, prayers, and moments of quiet reflection.
Matilda was named after the well-loved song “Waltzing Matilda,” a nod to the safety her family from Ukraine found in Australia.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns shared a poem during the service, stating,
“She is now waltzing with the angels.”
Community Grief
A religious figure who officiated the service struggled to articulate the deep sense of loss. “The tragic killing of young Matilda feels akin to losing our own child,” he stated.
He reassured the attendees that while words may not provide immediate relief, the bond of their loss is enduring.
Just a day prior, the leader had buried a family member who also perished in the Bondi incident.
Matilda’s aunt lamented the family’s brokenness, expressing doubts about her parents ever feeling joy again, while her younger sister, profoundly affected, appears lost, stating, “She has no tears left to cry.”
Another Victim Remembered
On the same day, another victim of the Bondi shooting was laid to rest. Alex Kleytman, an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor, died while trying to protect his wife in the chaos.
His family emphasized that although the attackers ended his life, his legacy and love would resonate through the memories he left behind.
Investigation Update
Local authorities have classified the Bondi shooting as a terrorist act driven by extremist ideology.
The police reported that the suspects involved were a father-son duo, with the father dying at the scene, while the son has been arrested and faced multiple charges, including 15 counts of murder.
In the wake of this tragedy, the government has proposed stricter laws against hate-related acts, including provisions for visa cancellations related to such actions.
