Farhan Akhtar Addresses Amitabh Bachchan's 'Nausikhiya' Comment

Post by : Meena Hassan

Bollywood icon and filmmaker Farhan Akhtar has recently shared insights regarding his experience while directing Amitabh Bachchan in the 2004 film Lakshya. This follows a remark by Bachchan, who expressed that he felt like a ‘nausikhiya’ under Akhtar's direction.

In his appearance on Aap Ki Adalat, Farhan emphasized that it was never his goal to instruct Big B in his craft. He noted that his inexperience and the structured environment of the military cantonment where they filmed contributed to any misunderstandings.

Farhan recounted the challenges he faced on his initial day directing, stating that he was apprehensive about adhering to the schedule. "On the first day, I felt immense pressure to complete the scenes efficiently. I thought it would be helpful to communicate privately with Mr. Bachchan about any challenges he faced," he explained.

A Good Intent Turned Awry

He revealed that Amitabh's scene had taken longer than expected and that his intention was only to ensure a smooth workflow.

"I approached his room, saying, ‘Sir, if you’re experiencing any difficulties, please tell me so we can address it together.’ I have come to realize that my approach might have been misinterpreted,” he confessed.

“Perhaps my eagerness as a first-time director gave the impression I was attempting to guide him, which was far from my intention. I later understood that he might have felt uncomfortable, for which I apologized. I merely sought a seamless shoot,” he added.

Amitabh Bachchan's Side of the Story

During a recent episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 17, featuring Farhan and his father Javed Akhtar, Amitabh outlined his perspective.

The celebrated actor mentioned his discomfort on the first day, noting the unique atmosphere and the relays of retakes. “It was an unfamiliar environment for me. I struggled initially and felt embarrassed,” he shared.

He noted that Farhan visited him later that evening, asking if he was facing any challenges. “I joked with Jaya, saying that they implied I didn’t know how to act! She reassured me to come home if I wasn’t comfortable. However, I persevered, and things fell into place from the next day forward,” he recounted.

Respect and Affection Between the Two

While a misunderstanding briefly overshadowed their interactions, both Amitabh and Farhan have voiced their mutual admiration. The legendary actor commends Farhan's inventive approach, while Farhan considers Big B one of his key influences in cinema.

Their partnership on Lakshya remains significant, enriching Farhan's journey as a director while producing lasting memories from the filmmaking process.

A Brief Overview of Lakshya

Released in 2004, Lakshya marked Farhan Akhtar’s second directorial endeavor following Dil Chahta Hai. The war-centric drama featured major stars like Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta, set against the backdrop of the Kargil conflict.

Although it initially had a lukewarm reception at the box office, the film has since garnered a devoted following, celebrated for its impactful narrative and brilliant performances, cementing its status as one among Bollywood’s overlooked masterpieces.

Farhan Akhtar is anticipated to star in 120 Bahadur, a cinematic portrayal of true events directed by Razneesh Ghai. He takes on the role of Major Shaitan Singh alongside co-stars Raashii Khanna and Vivian Bhatena, with a planned release date of November 21.

Amitabh Bachchan continues to host Kaun Banega Crorepati 17, with imminent work set for the sequel of Kalki 2898 AD, helmed by Nag Ashwin. This much-anticipated project, featuring Prabhas and Kamal Haasan, is reportedly set to commence in December.
