Renewed tensions erupted along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of five individuals and injuring six, as both nations accused each other of initiating the gunfire. This resurgence of violence casts a pall over the active ceasefire discussions in Turkey, which aim to resolve weeks of intense cross-border conflict between the two neighboring countries.
Officials in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province reported that the deceased included four women and one man. The altercation took place in the Spin Boldak district, an area notorious for frequent confrontations between Afghan and Pakistani military forces.
“Today’s shooting resulted in five fatalities and six injuries,” confirmed an official at the Spin Boldak district hospital. Eyewitnesses described the gunfire lasting approximately 10 to 15 minutes before the situation stabilized.
The Afghan government accused Pakistan of instigating the clash, asserting that it occurred during ongoing peace deliberations in Istanbul.
“With the third round of talks with Pakistan ongoing, their forces opened fire at Spin Boldak,” stated Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban government, emphasizing that Afghan forces avoided retaliation to protect civilians.
Conversely, Pakistan refuted these claims, alleging that the initial gunfire originated from the Afghan side.
“We categorically reject the accusations from Afghan officials. Our security forces responded appropriately to the gunfire initiated from Afghan territory,” the Pakistani Information Ministry declared in an official statement.
Discussions in Istanbul have stagnated, with both sides blaming each other for the lack of progress in finalizing ceasefire agreements.
Hamdullah Fitrat, the deputy spokesperson for the Taliban administration, confirmed that talks are ongoing but expressed uncertainty about the cause of the Pakistani gunfire.
Turkey, the host nation, acknowledged last week that both parties had concurred on establishing a joint mechanism for monitoring and verification to uphold peace and address future violations. However, the recent flare-up in violence poses a significant challenge to these plans.
The United Nations previously indicated that over 50 Afghan civilians lost their lives and nearly 450 sustained injuries during a week of confrontations in October. On the Pakistani side, military reports cited 23 soldiers killed and 29 others wounded during the same timeframe.
This latest incident highlights the precarious nature of the situation along the border, where ongoing territorial and security disputes exacerbate distrust. Islamabad accuses Kabul of harboring the Pakistani Taliban (TTP), which frequently stages attacks within Pakistan. The Taliban government has dismissed these allegations, urging for recognition of Afghanistan’s sovereignty.
As negotiations progress in Turkey, both nations face increasing international pressure to exercise restraint and strive towards a durable peace agreement to avert further violence.
